Sibagat is also the term used to distinguish the meeting place of two rivers, the principal river “Wawa” about eighty meters wide at its junction and Sibagat River which is one of the biggest Wawa River’s tributaries.
Sibagat was further given meaning as a meeting place of people who originated from the Manobos of surrounding areas of Gibong, Umayam, Kasilayan, Ma-asam, Ohot, Andanan and further joined by people coming from Butuan and Cabadbaran and other towns of Agusan province.
Geographical Location The first municipality to the south from Butuan City, the municipality of Sibagat is bounded in the north by Butuan City, on the east by the Province of Surigao del Sur, in the west by the Province of Agusan del Norte and in the south by the Municipality of Bayugan, its mother town.

The rare Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) was captured by a Manobo farmer on July 2 in the same barangay using a piglet on a nylon noose as bait.
He turned it over to the Department of Natural Resources Caraga office, which brought it to the PEF Center in Malagos, Davao City, where it was kept for 43 days.
The eagle, named "Sibagat" after this town, was the second captured in the Caraga region, which is composed of the provinces of Agusan del Norte and Sur and Surigao del Norte and Sur.

Malaya claimed a Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu) member and a soldier belonging to the 30th IB Army were killed and three others wounded in a 30-minute shootout in remote Calamba village, Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte.
Simbajon said troops of the 29th Infantry Battalion under Colonel Amador Tabuga were still pursuing fleeing NPA rebels in Barangay New Tubigon, Sibagat, Agusan del Sur.
From Tubigon, the rebels reportedly retreated to the forest boundary of the municipalities of Sibagat and Bayugan near the boundary of Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Sur, dragging along with them their wounded comrades, Simbajon said.

Joint pursuit operations by the 402th Infantry (Stingers) Brigade, Sibagat police, and Butuan police led by director Senior Supt. Ramon "Sprite" C. Espiritu against the fleeing armed group are ongoing.
Initial theory of the police said the attack in Purok 8 was perpetrated by communist insurgents operating in the area.

RED Tumaliuan said the eaglet is temporarily under the care at DENR-Regional Office here and to be transported to Surigao City Aviary upon its recovery from stress for custody and maintenance since the bird is still young.
As he expressed gratitude to Mabandos and local officials in Sibagat town, he also appealed to anybody who will find or capture the same endangered specie to set it free or turn it over immediately to proper authorities.

Francisco I. Simbajon, regional Army spokesman, said combat troops of 29th Infantry Battallion under Col. Amador Tabuga were still conducting "hot pursuit" operations against the fleeing New People’s Army (NPA) rebels.
He said the pursuing troops found bloodstains on the escape route of the rebels, who are reportedly members of Front Committee 21-B of the CPP-NPA Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NEMRC).
