Sibawayh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sibawayh (Sibuyeh in Persian, سيبويه Sîbawayh in Arabic, سیبویه) was a linguist of Persian origin born ca.
Because the Arab elite of Sibawayh's time did not encourage non-Arabs to learn their language, so that only Arabs could take high positions in the government, Sibawayh was the first non-Arab to write on Arabic grammar and therefore the first one to explain Arabic grammar from a non-Arab perspective.
Sibawayh died in Shiraz (also in the Fars province of Iran) around 793 AD.

Scientific Inquiry : Comparison between Peirce’s and Sibawayh’s phenomenology
The aim of our research is the study of a theory of Arabic language, namely Sibawayh Grammar  in order to build an appropriate computational model for the processing of Arabic language and investigate if there is some idea that could  yield new insight in the problem of natural language syntax in general.
Indeed, Sibawayh Grammar is a genuine scientific theory and it is surprising to see at which point the underlying method of scientific investigation was very ahead of its time: western philosophy of science, handicapped by the system of Aristotle’s logic spent centuries to build similar concepts and methods.
The foundation stone of Sibawayh Grammar is “qiyas” (قياس) which is not only a linguistic approach but a sophisticated form of scientific reasoning that reminds willingly Peirce’s abduction.

Sibawayh's only work is called Kitab Sibawayh ("The Book of Sibawayh"), which was edited after his early death by his student al-Akhfash al-Awsat (died between 825 and 835).
Sibawayh's grammar book is an original work of great genius that broke new ground.
After Sibawayh, Arabic was for centuries the most thoroughly analyzed and elucidated of languages from a grammatical point of view—a claim that may still hold true today.

Subsequently, al-Mubarrad's position vis-a-vis Sibawayh and other contemporary grammarians is analyzed in depth and, finally, his decisive role in the development of Arabic linguistics is discussed.
Those interested in the intellectual history of early Islam will benefit from the study since it revises current interpretations on the development of Arabic grammar and questions the historicity of the so-called "grammatical schools".
A separate edition of the oldest extant commentary on the Kitab Sibawayh, by Ibn Wallad (d.332 AH/943 AD), is included.

Inherent in its analytic approach are the concepts of the phoneme, the morpheme and the root, only recognized by Western linguists some two millennia later.
In the Middle East, the Persian linguist Sibawayh made a detailed and professional description of Arabic in 760 CE in his monumental work, al-kitab fi an-nahw (“الكتاب في النحو”, “The Book on Grammar”), bringing many linguistic aspects of language to light.
In his book he developed a distinct phonetic and phonological theory.
