There's Sibel (Sibel Kekilli), a gorgeous young woman from a Hamburg suburb, who struggles against her ultra-conservative parents, who want her married to a fellow Turk—she feels more like living her life to the fullest than playing the part of devout Muslim housewife.
Sibel proposes that the two unite in a marriage of convenience; Cahit at first declines, but eventually agrees to play along, in order to free her from her family's chokingly tight control.
Both Kekilli, whose body of work in the past was limited to adult films, and Unel give powerful performances as two self-destructive individuals who find each other and spark the flame of a relationship, albeit an unstable one, from the ashes of their lives.

In Fatih Akin's earlier film, "In July," the German-born writer-director took an old-fashioned road movie romance (a variation on "It Happened One Night") and gave it a craggy, sun-baked sweetness.
