V posledních letech se na Irian Jayu vypravilo několik velmi náročných expedic a tak se dostal ostrov Siberut a jeho obyvatelé poněkud stranou zájmů.
Na Siberut a jeho obyvatele budeme vzpomínat ještě dlouho.

Siberut provides a vivid example of the way the powerful combination of Indonesia's economic problems and changes to local autonomy and forestry legislation threaten the future of the country's forests and indigenous people.
The result for Siberut has been a flurry of applications for logging and plantation licences as companies fall over themselves to get their hands on over 200,000 hectares of commercially valuable timber which lies outside the national park.
For example, head of Siberut national park, Zuwendra, has appointed several more permanent staff on the island (instead of just in the Padang office) and has made clear to the park guards that it is their responsibility to control logging operations by the newly formed 'co-operatives'.

Madobag is one dusun (hamlet) of three located in south-eastern Siberut on the western bank of the Rereiket river which flows in a south easterly direction to where it meets the sea some 22 km away, or 15 km as the crow flies.
For South Siberut this is Muara Siberut, located on the coast at the mouth of the Siberut river, into which the Rereiket river feeds as a tributary further upstream.
In relation to the whole of South Siberut, 12.8% of the population live in the Madobag Desa which is the fourth largest, going by population, in the Kecamatan.

On December 8th 1998, the W. Sumatra authorities held an unprecedented meeting in the provincial capital Padang where 120 leading community, religious and administrative representatives from all the Mentawai islands were invited to two days of presentations from officials on development, forestry and transmigration.
This was to include a talk by PT Citra Mandiri Widyanusa on oil palm plantations on Siberut as part of plans to bring 10,800 transmigrants to the Mentawais to work on a nucleus-estate smallholder basis.
In South Siberut, community organisations from 15 villages have formed a network and in May, in North Siberut, 150 people representing all the major clans agreed to form a community organisation and to work with their counterparts in the South.
