  HOW TO GET THERE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
The best route to the Tacaná summit (4091 m) from the Guatemalan side of the border leaves from a town called Sibinal at 2500 m elevation, about 7 km ENE of the summit (75 x 2.3).
Sibinal is reached by car and a poorly maintained road from San Marcos, about 65 km away and Ixchiguan.
The trail is known by residents of Sibinal, and leads up the Sierra de Sibinal to a place called La Haciendita (74.5 x 98) after about 3-4 hrs.

The same unit is about one meter thick at Sibinal and can be traced to Ixchiguan (19 km) where it is 15 cm thick.
Tacaná has had at least 3 plinian eruptions in the past as evidenced by observed sequential fall deposits outcropping on the roads from Sibinal to the towns of Tacaná and Ixchiguan.
The areas adjacent to the volcano potentially threatened by accumulation of 1+ m of ash, based on past eruptions, is shown in the pyroclastic flow, mudflow, and flood hazard map on the following page.

In the afternoon I arrived in San Marcos, rather in the west close to the Mexican border.
But I only get off at 10 past 7pm in Sibinal after a 2 hours ride on a gravel road.
At noon we were back in Sibinal and an hour later the Bus to San Sebastian left, the starting point to the Volcano Tajamulco.

I don´t usually bother signing summit logs if I don´t make the summit but I think I have more info for any one interested in doing this from Sibinal, email me. I then walked into Mexico using Scott´s route down to Union Juarez, interesting, but tough day.
See TR here, but Guatemala Volcanoes are not covered in detail, yet.
The first time i climed Tacana was in mid may, just before the rainy season.

Some refugees in the 1980s only learned that they were "Guatemalan" when they were told so in Chiapas, Mexico, after fleeing the Guatemalan army´s scorched-earth campaigns.
According to municipal officials in Sibinal, San Marcos, there are villages today, such as Las Pilas, where some residents are unaware that they "are Guatemalan." Identity created by language, locality and culture have been far more relevant than September 15, the national anthem and the blue-and-white flag.
If in 184 years the State has not been able to convert itself into a relevant benchmark for many people within its borders, then what possibilities exist today for achieving this when the modernizing role of the State is in crisis?

It is good that help is reaching the affected in Pacific Coast area (the official number being 3,5 million who need help), but in regions like Tacana, Sibinal and Tajumulco, inhabited at 8000 feet, the helicopters and airplanes do not reach.
Eduardo Stein, The Vice President of the country, ensured that as the weather will not be better the helicopters sent by USA will not be able to enter.

San Diego handily beat Taximaroa 5-0 in the Fall season opener in early September, but after a 7-3 Champions League victory on September 16 over Ciclón Azul, the Liga Internacional champion, they managed only a 2-2 draw in league play against Fuerte San José just two days later.
The Silverbacks newcomers recovered the following weekend to thrash Sibinal 9-0, followed by the last group-stage Champions League match, a tough 2-2 tie with Future Stars last Friday.
Injuries and fatigue played a factor (again only on two days rest) in San Diego’s first league defeat of the season, a 2-1 decision against another Liga Lawrenceville powerhouse, Real Tapatío.

I just returned from visiting my friends in Sipacapa, San Miguel, Sibinal and San Marcos and had the opportunity to see the mining operation in San Miguel.
I have driven the road in the past from San Miguel to Sipacapa and I was devistated to see what was going on.

 SummitPost - Tacana -- Climbing, Hiking & Mountaineering
The Mexican side of Tacana is much easier to get to as its near some larger towns, but it is a longer hike from that side and usually takes two days, sometimes more.
From the Guatemala side, and Guatamala City, take the bus to San Marcos, once there, you need to take the road to San Jose Ojetenam, and after of reach that villiage, take the bus to Sibinal, which is where the trail starts.
Sporatic bus service is available for the long 350 km ride.
