North Dakota is one of the most rural states in the nation; the cities and towns supply the needs of neighboring farms, and industry is largely devoted to the processing of agricultural products.
The eastern half of the state is in the central lowlands, a belt of fl earth covered in spring by the soft green of sprouting grain and later by the bronze of flowering wheat or the blue of flax.
When this movement failed in the legislature of 1915, the Nonpartisan League, directed in North Dakota by Arthur C. Townley, was organized on a platform that included state ownership of terminal elevators and flour mills, state inspection of grain and grain dockage, relief of farm improvements from taxation, and rural credit banks operated at cost.

Sibley developed an interest in hybridisation and its implications for evolution and taxonomy and, in the early 1960s he began to focus on molecular studies: of blood proteins, and then the electrophoresis of egg-white proteins.
Sibley was instrumental in passing the legislation in 1802 by which Detroit was incorporated as a town.
Sibley was elected first as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and then under the first city charter of 1806 as the first mayor of Detroit.

 Sibley State Park, a Minnesota State Park near Willmar
Four times in the history of Minnesota, glaciers advanced from the north, covering the state with a sheet of ice up to two miles thick.
White-tailed deer, red and gray fox, coyote, raccoon, and ruffed grouse are inhabitants of the forest.
Realizing that the area was a popular spot for more than the local people, the Legislature established Sibley as a state park in 1919.

 JURIST – The Dakota Conflict Trials
On Sunday, August 17, four Dakota from a breakaway band of young malcontents were on a hunting trip when they came across some eggs in a hen's nest along the fence line of a settler's homestead.
On August 23, a second Dakota attack on New Ulm leaves most of the town burned to the ground, and 2,000 refugees, mostly women, children, and wounded men, set of in wagons and on foot for Mankato, thirty miles away.
The next day, Sibley and his men succeeded in lifting the Dakota siege at Fort Ridgely, and the second phase of the Dakota Conflict-- an organized American military effort to defeat and punish the Sioux-- began.

Sibley changed the office into the parlor, and an office addition was added to the house's east.
The Sibley's were gracious hosts and entertained many of the prominent people who arrived n the territory including General Lewis Cass, Henry R. Schoolcraft, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Lieutenant John Charles Fremont, George Catlin, and Stephen Douglas.
Sibley built a new home in St. Paul in 1862 and sold his Mendota home to the parish of St. Peter's Catholic Church.

 The Dakota Conflict (Sioux Uprsing) Trials of 1862

 Military Forts in North and South Dakota
A designated North Dakota State Historic Site, located on the east edge of Abercrombie, ND Lt. Colonel John J. Abercrombie established Fort Abercrombie on August 28, 1858, on the Red River in Dakota Territory.
It was the first permanent U.S. military fort established in what was to become North Dakota and was also the only post in the area besieged by Dakota warriors for more than six weeks during the Dakota Conflict of 1862.
A designated North Dakota State Historic Site, located approximately one-half mile SW of Fort Ransom, ND Fort Ransom, established in 1867 to protect overland travel from Minnesota to Montana, was named in honor of Brevet Major General Thomas E. Ransom of the US Volunteers.

Henry Hastings Sibley led his troops from Fort Ridgely, Minnesota, into the Dakotas, pursuing the Santee Sioux, who had initiated an uprising in the Minnesota River Valley in August 1862.
Sibley established a camp on a nearby salt lake and set his men to entrenching it for protection.
Sibley, with some men, approached the “Big Mound” on the opposite side of the ravine.

Henry Hastings Sibley continued his march after the retreating Sioux until he reached Stony Lake, where his animals’ exhaustion compelled him to encamp.
On the 28th, the force had started out in pursuit again when Sibley discovered that a large number of Sioux was moving upon him.
Sibley remarked in his report that Stony Lake was “the greatest conflict between our troops and the Indians, so far as the numbers were concerned.”
