The annelid fossil record is sparse, but a few definite forms are known as early as the Cambrian, and there are some signs they were around in the later Precambrian.
A few small groups have been treated as separate phyla: the Pogonophora and Vestimentifera, now included in the family Siboglinidae, and the Echiura.
The arthropods and their kin have long been considered the closest relatives of the annelids, on account of their common segmented structure, but a number of differences between the two groups suggest this may be convergent evolution.

 Symbiont transmission in the hydrothermal vent tubeworms
The uptake of symbionts in hydrothermal vent tubeworms (Vestimentifera, Siboglini­dae) is facilitated by massive infection of the skin and simultaneous apoptosis.
The current hypothesis proposes that the transmission   and establishment of the symbiosis between hydrothermal vent tubeworms (Vestimentifera, Siboglinidae) and thiotrophic endosymbionts is by uptake of symbionts through the digestive system in early juveniles into endodermal mitgut cells, followed by proliferations and transformation of midgut cells into bacteriocytes, and development of the trophosome.
Riftia pachyptila (Vestimentifera, Siboglinidae), but neither the content of these vesicles was analyzed, nor their density in the different morphotypes in different regions of the trophosome from different animals.

 Riftia
is the largest of all Siboglinidae, reaching 1.5 m in length.
Virtually all of their nutritional requirements are derived from the bacteria in the body, which can make up 15% of the animal's total body weight.
The palps of project from the tube and are richly supplied with blood vessels that serve for the respiratory purposes of the worm, but also to transport the sulphide and carbon dioxide that are needed by the symbiotic bacteria.

 Pogonophora
The Pogonophora, or beard worms, are a small group of deep sea tube worms[?] often found growing around warm springs.
The rear of the body is segmented, and together with the Vestimentifera they have recently been regarded as a family of annelids, called the Siboglinidae[?], though they were earlier treated as a phylum.
They appear to feed primarily on symbiotic bacteria living in their mouthless bodies.

At Hook Ridge hydrothermal vent, a new species of Sclerolinum (Monilifera, Siboglinidae) was found at a water depth of 1,045 m.
Comparison with geochemical data from other reducing sediments indicates that the two groups of Siboglinidae, Monilifera and Frenulata, occur in sediments with low sulfide concentration and flux.
In contrast, sulfurbased chemosynthetic organisms that typically occur at hydrothermal vents and cold seeps (e.g., Vestimentifera, vesicomyid clams, and bacterial mats) occur in sediments with higher sulfide availability; threshold values are around 500 µmol L

Representatives of all of the major morphologically identified clades were used, as well as members of the Sipuncula, Echiura, Turbellaria, Clitellata and Siboglinidae (formerly the phyla Pogonophora and Vestimentifera).
As suggested by some recent morphological and molecular analyses, Siboglinidae and Clitellata may well have sister groups among polychaetes.
The morphologically aberrant Sternaspidae are closest to members of Terebellida in the present analyses, supporting the placement of Rouse and Fauchald.

Riftia pachyptila is one of the most spectacular members of Siboglinidae.
Formerly ranked as a phylum, the clade Vestimentifera to which Riftia belongs, contains members that are usually found near hydrothermal vents or cold seeps.
Other members of Siboglinidae, belonging to Frenulata are found associated with methane-seeps in sediments or with sunken wood.

The Articulata is considered, on current evidence, to consist of four monophyletic groups; the Arthropoda, Clitellata, Polychaeta, and Pogonophora, though the latter group may be a clade of polychaetes.
If this is shown the Pogonophora should revert to the original family name Siboglinidae Caulley 1914.

Recent phylogenetic analyses have led to profound changes in the view that the Annelida, as traditionally formulated, is a natural, monophyletic group.
Both molecular and morphological analyses support placement of the Siboglinidae (formerly the Pogonophora) as a derived group within the Annelida; there is also evidence, based on molecular analysis of the nuclear gene elongation factor-1 alpha, that the unsegmented echiurids are derived annelids.
While monophyly of the Clitellata is well-supported by both molecular and morphological analyses, there is no molecular evidence to support monophyly of the polychaete annelids; the Clitellata fall within a paraphyletic polychaete grade.
