SIBSAGAR, a town and district of British India, in eastern Bengal and Assam.
Sibsagar is the chief centre of tea cultivation in the Brahmaputra valley, which was introduced by the Assam Company in 1852.
Owing to the raja's misrule, Sibsagar was reduced to a state of great poverty, and, as he was unable to pay the tribute, the territories were resumed by the government of India, and in 1838 were placed under the direct management of a British officer.

The Sibsagar Catholic Church had published two booklets containing hymns and prayers, which were literal but allegedly distorted translations of the Namghosa, the most sacred book of the Vasishnavites.
Realising the gravity of the situation, the Sibsagar district administration intervened and Additional Deputy Commissioner A K Sarma Roy convened a meeting of both parties to settle the matter amicably.
Father Joy Palliaunnel of the Sibsagar Catholic Church, who was in charge when the translation was done and the booklets published, regretted the incident and handed the published booklets to the district administration.

Seven persons, including two children, were killed and 19 injured when the banned militant organisation ULFA set off a powerful bomb inside a public transport mini-bus in Sibsagar district today.
According to police sources from Sibsagar town, the bomb fitted with an improvised explosive device placed inside a bag under a third row seat behind the driver was triggered by remote control around 10 a.m.
The mini-bus was proceeding to Sibsagar from Sonari.

Lakhi Nath Tamuli, Deputy Commissioner of Sibsagar district is said to have beaten up Parag Saikia, a rural correspondent of Aji, a newly-established Assamese daily when the latter wrote a series of stories in connection with a case of alleged misappropriation of funds from the district treasury.
On Tuesday, Saikia was allegedly picked up by the police from his residence at Demow, about 25 kms from Sibsagar town, and brought to the DC's office, where the Tamuli allegedly beat him up so badly that he had to be admitted to a nursing home for treatment.
Meanwhile, the Sibsagar District Journalists Association, in an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, announced its decision to boycott all official functions and events till the government took punitive measures against the Deputy Commissioner.

July 3: Lockout was declared on Tuesday in three out of the four divisions of Birla-owned Jayshree Group of tea gardens in Sibsagar, Assam after a top executive of one of the gardens was fatally assaulted by labourers.
A group of irate workers protesting against the alleged manhandling of one of their colleagues by the group manager of the company, Harpreet Singh Mann and other officials directed their ire against Mann and stoned him to death.
Peeved at the manner in which one of their colleagues was detained the day before the laboures had gone to register their protest at the manager's office, police said.
