Maria Sibylla Merian was born on 2nd April, 1647 in Frankfort on the Maine.
It is part of the folklore of Maria Sibylla that her father prophesied on his deathbed that the name of Merian would be remembered for ever on account of the genius of his then three-year-old daughter.
After Maria's second marriage ended in divorce in 1685, her eldest daughter, Johanna Helena, married the merchant Jacob Herolt from Bacharach who was involved in trade with the then new Dutch colony of Suriname in South America.

Agnes of Courtenay, now back at court, advised her son to have Sibylla married to the newly-arrived Frankish knight Guy of Lusignan, her client, brother of her personal constable, Amalric of Lusignan (who was said to be her lover).
Before her crowning Sibylla agreed with oppositional court members that she would annul her own marriage to please them, as long as she would be given free choice in her next husband.

 Soul's Beauty - Collection Introduction
Written as a commentary on the painting Sibylla Palmifera (commissioned in 1866), the sonnet represents one of DGR's most important statements of his artistic ideals.
More particularly, the octave's “Beauty enthroned” not only references DGR's painting “Sibylla Palmifera”, for which this sonnet was written; it recalls any number of traditional Madonna paintings.
The sonnet gives a general rendering of the painting which inspired it, Sibylla Palmifera (i.e., the palm-bearing sibyl, a figure of peace and benevolence).

The magnificent painting Sibylla Palmifera demonstrates the connections artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti often made between his paintings and his poetry.
The butterflies that hover in the background are symbols of the soul, and the poppies that appear in the upper right corner are often used to symbolize sleep or death in art.
Sibylla Palmifera is also an example of one of Rossetti's primary artistic obsessions - depicting the beautiful woman that so haunted his imagination.

Sibylla Brodzinsky’s article on Venezuela (“Leftwing dictator or saviour of the poor: Chavez faces new challenge to his rule” www.guardian.co.uk/print/0,3858,4931593-103681,00.html) fits into the pattern of half-truths and open lies that characterises the media coverage of the Bolivarian revolution.
But really, short of that, the US administration has used all other means at their disposal, open and covert, to undermine and overthrow the democratically elected government of Venezuela, one that in reality has more claim to democratic legitimacy than Bush’s.
We ask ourselves how an article by Sibylla Brodzinsky, who to our knowledge has never written for the Guardian before, but who is a regular collaborator of the right wing Miami Herald, made it into the pages of the Guardian.
