Sicilian Defence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sicilian Defence is a chess opening which begins with:
The most common Sicilian variations start with the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3, when there are three main continuations for Black: 2...d6, 2...Nc6, and 2...e6.
This has the disadvantage of allowing 2...d5 which is playable as a pawn sacrifice (3.exd5 Nf6), however White may refuse this with 3.Nc3, leading to the so-called Toilet Variation, named after the inventor's original place of inspiration.

Chess opening - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Recognized sequences of opening moves are referred to as openings or defenses, and have been given names such as the Ruy Lopez, Sicilian Defense, and Queen's Gambit Declined.
The most popular Black defense to 1.e4 is the Sicilian, but the French and the Caro-Kann are also very popular.
Its greatest appeal may be that by adopting a set pattern of development, White can avoid the large amount of opening study required to prepare to meet the many different possible Black replies to 1.e4.

 French Defence & Sicilian Defence
The books are organized by games (448 for the Sicilian, 401 for the French), filled rather densely by sub-games and annotations; and there are exercises on strategy and tactics at the back of the book.
There are very few of these in the Sicilian book but many in the French volume; obviously they are scant substitute for the real investigation of a position, but they may be helpful markers.
On the other hand, their scope is broader than most openings books, there are suggestions and notes unfamiliar to the Western reader, and fans of these openings may be drawn to the large number of annotated games.

 Sicilian
The Sicilian Defence arises after 1 e4 c5.
The Sicilian Defence is Black's best fighting defence against 1 e4 because it guarantees an unbalanced position, yet it is sound and active; players who need to win most often utilize the Sicilian Defence.
In these lines, White is allowed a temporary lead in development, in return for a flexible mass of central pawns.

These days the Sicilian is the most popular of all the openings, with its various different forms having been named after Grandmasters such as Boleslavsky, Najdorf and Sveshnikov, towns such as Scheveningen and Gothenburg, mythical beasts such as the Dragon and weapons such as the Kalashnikov!
Perhaps the most Sicilian of them all is the dreaded Poisoned Pawn Variation which has caused many a White player to end up "sleeping with the fishes".
Amongst the best volumes on this opening are the Batsford books, 'Beating the Sicilian 3' by John Nunn and Joe Gallagher, 'Winning with the Sicilian' by Mark Taimanov and 'The Sicilian Scheveningen' by Gary Kasparov and Alexander Nikitin.

In this second part of their detailed work on the Dragon Sicilian, the authors present coverage, to date, of all lines other than the Rauzer, which is dealt with in Volume One.
A favourite of leading players such as Vladimir Kramnik and Valery Salov, the Sveshnikov Sicilian is arguably the most dynamic and controversial line in the whole of the Sicilian Defence.
The Classical variation of the Nimzo-Indian Defence (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Qc2) was adopted by Capablanca, Euwe and Alekhine in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s but remained relatively unfashionable until recently.
