To Sleep... Perchance to Dream?-Medicine At Michigan Fall 2003
In research directed by Sid Gilman, M.D., the William J. Herdman Professor and chair of Neurology in the Medical School, U-M scientists made positron emission tomography (PET) brain scans and conducted detailed sleep studies for 13 patients with multiple system atrophy, a rare and fatal degenerative neurological disease.
Gilman is careful to note that the research findings to date only show correlation, not causation, between brain chemistry and sleep disorders.
Gilman says he and other specialists suspect that sleep disorders may be an early symptom in many cases of Parkinson's disease.

But the memory result was surprising and encouraging for the general idea of using the immune system to attack Alzheimer's, said researcher Sid Gilman.
Gilman spoke in a telephone interview before presenting the vaccine results Wednesday at the International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders in Philadelphia.
People with Alzheimer's have amyloid plaque clumps in their brains, and the vaccine was designed to develop blood proteins call antibodies to attack the plaque.

HealthScout - Sleep Disorders May Have Roots in Brain Chemicals   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
REM sleep behavior disorder is when people thrash about in their sleep, moan, speak, act out their dreams, get out of bed and even pummel their bed partners, explains study author Dr. Sid Gilman, chairman of the department of neurology at the University of Michigan School of Medicine.
This finding has led Gilman to wonder if REM sleep behavior disorder could be a very early symptom of Parkinson's.
If so, Gilman says, "there might be a whole other way of treating this." Right now, obstructive sleep apnea is typically treated by having the person wear a "continuous positive airway pressure" mask at night to keep the airways open.

Alzheimer's Vaccine Research Back On Track
"There was a dose response," said Dr. Sid Gilman, director of the Michigan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center in Ann Arbor and head of the Data Safety Monitoring Board for both trials being reported in Neurology.
The second paper delivered somewhat of a surprise: The authors had anticipated that patients who had a good antibody response and good memory stabilization would have less brain shrinkage than patients unresponsive to the immune-based therapy.
Gilman's interprets that finding to mean that vaccine-stimulated antibodies removed not only the beta amyloid deposited within the brain, but also the soluble beta amyloid bathing the brain.

Sid Gilman, a neurologist at the University of Michigan, reported Wednesday on an approach that might delay the disease -- if safety problems can be fixed.
Gilman and his colleagues gave 300 patients one to three doses of the vaccine before Irish drug company Elan stopped the trial in 2002 after 18 people developed a potentially life-threatening brain inflammation.
But Gilman says the shrinkage occurs as a byproduct of the brain clearing out the deposits.

Faulty Brain May Cause Sleep Apnea
It's the first evidence of this link -- and may point to a drug remedy for common sleep problems like sleep apnea, reports lead researcher Sid Gilman, MD, a neurologist with the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, in a news release.
In his reports, Gilman details research involving 13 patients -- all with a brain disorder called multiple system atrophy, a complex, rare, and disabling disease that also involves serious sleep disturbances.
For example, acetylcholine-producing neurons are connected to the part of the brain that controls muscles of the upper airway and tongue -- and are involved in sleep apnea.
