  James, Sid
Sid James established himself as a nationally recognised figure in British broadcasting in a ground-breaking radio comedy, Hancock's Half Hour in the mid-1950s.
James had joined a South African regiment of the British Army in 1939 and soon became a producer in its entertainment unit.
James' dependency on the Hancock connection was broken at the start of the 1960s when he began to appear in what became a highly successful series of Carry On films (Carry on Constable was his first in 1960).

Sid James   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Sidney James entered the world of the Carry Ons in Carry On Constable in 1960 after being a well-known face in British films, a face which various critics had likened to an over-worked punch bag and an army assault course.
For all Sid’s personal problems, betting, drinking and womanising, he was a professional through and through and was perhaps considered more of an actor than a true comedian as Sid could not work without a script.
Sid has done somewhat different roles in a couple of the Carry Ons, for example in Cowboy (his favourite of the whole series) he sports an American accent and is the villain of the piece.

Citizen James - Nostalgia Central   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The Sidney Balmoral James in Citizen James was a variation on the Hancock's Half Hour character: a fast-talking, quick-thinking gambler with an eye for a buck and a tendency to become involved in dubious schemes.
Initially, James was supported in his new venture by another former member of the Hancock rep, Bill Kerr, cast as his keen henchman, and by Liz Fraser, as James's marriage-craving, seven-year fiancé (who was also the owner of a drinking club).
Citizen James certainly wasn't a classic, but it was an entertaining vehicle for the popular James, whose trademark "kyah-kyah-kyah" cackle brightened up many a cold, dark winter's evening at the start of the 1960s.
