Topic: Side Characters (Xenosaga)

  RPGLAND Game Preview: Xenosaga II
Xenosaga II features a host of changes from the original, including a new approach to the character designs, a redesigned battle system, new skill systems, and new playable characters.
On the topic of the presentation, character designs have a more mature look to them, slightly deferring from the anime-esque portraits in Episode I. Namco says the change was done to make the character's faces more expressive.
With new characters, revamped battle and skill systems, enhanced character designs and more, expect Xenosaga Episode II to make an impact on the RPG scene when it is released in North America on 2/15/05.

On the other side, voice acting is done well, and though Xenosaga suffers from the same problem as FFX — lips were not resynced to English voice actors — it’s effects are far less noticeable as the voice actors don’t try to match the digital lips exactly.
Xenosaga’s animation, too, is exceptional, especially when the length of the game is taken into account — added together, something like seven hours of the game is cut scene.
Xenosaga is not a game that a player can legitimately expect to spend an hour on and then put down.

Cidolfas's RPG Reviews: Xenosaga Episode I
Each character has three types of points to spend, all of which are won in battle or by using items.
Characters can also use AGWS (giant robots) in battle, and they can also be equipped in the menu.
The characters tend to be a bit too chubby, and often a bit too smooth in the face, but the animation is more than adequate, and the environments are very detailed.

Into Liquid Sky - Game Reviews
Xenosaga is the spiritual prequel to Squaresoft's Xenogears - a hefty, epic RPG whose story was so deep and convoluted that it wore out even the hardiest of RPGers.
Since your side is broken up into two rows of three (not counting where the A.G.W.S. come into play), you can place your team on the front or back rows and even behind each other (Ziggy has an Ether that gives him a bonus when in front of MOMO).
The characters show a lot of facial expressions and carry themselves in different manners in such a convincing way that you'll feel a certain life has been given to them.

RPGamer - Review - Xenosaga II: Jenseits von Gut und Boese
Episode 1 of Xenosaga introduced gamers to a new set of characters, a brand new story, and spent a lot of time developing them, yet never reached a culmination, simply leaving gamers with unanswered questions.
Xenosaga 2 picks up the pace almost exactly where the first game left off, but the real question is whether or not the game steps up to give some answers and closure to the story.
Learning the enemies' break points and their weaknesses to damage types, as well as your own characters' strengths, is the only way to prevail through the battles; and even if you think you really have it down, don't be surprised if you fall in defeat during a standard battle encounter.

Xenosaga I and II Originally under the working title Xenosaga DS, Xenosaga I and II is a re-telling of the first two episodes of the game for the Nintendo DS handheld system.
Xenosaga I and II will not be an exact retelling of the previous two games; some minor changes will be made to the storyline of the game without changing the pre-existing elements which the first games have already laid out.

 Xenosaga II Review
Clearly Episode II was design as a backdrop story that further develops the characters of Xenosaga and ties up any loose ends that Episode I didn't fully explain when introducing these characters, the pass events of the Miltian Conflict, and the summoning of the Gnosis by Joachim Mizrahi to the fans.
Each character has their own unique personality which had been established in Episode I. Strong character development is here much like in the first episode but this time the focus is more directed toward Jr and Momo.
Xenosaga Episode II has a musical soundtrack and what a soundtrack it is. Almost every single track is a powerful rendition and grabs that attention of gamers and completely makes its mark on the players signifying that you are indeed playing a Xenosaga game.

Xenosaga III is suppose to put closure to the entire storyline but unfortunately there are still some plots that haven't been cleared up while other plots weren't explained clearly enough that gamers can understand.
It's these characters and their personal trials and tribulations are what turn the story into a personal story that will move the hearts and minds of gamers.
It is these characters and their own personal relationship with one another and their own personal storyline is what makes Xenosaga III story and the rest of the series storyline so great.

The most controversial decision in the development of Xenosaga is unquestionably the game’s reliance on cinemas to tell the narrative.

RPGFan Reviews - Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht
Xenosaga does frequently pay homage to Xenogears, though, best evident in the name of the main character, Shion Uzuki, and her brother Jin Uzuki is like a spitting image of Citan from Xenogears.
There is also a major side character who is a huge fan of Super Robots, and I'm sure most people will be dumbfounded when they find out what the most powerful spell in the game is. I personally thought the tribute to Gundam was nicely pulled off with its 'Type 100' moniker, though.
Xenosaga also has a 'simulator' option that will allow you to revisit past 'dungeons' which I guess is the closest thing to freedom of exploration you'll get in the game.

Xenosaga is a science-fiction-themed game set thousands of years in the future, when humankind is being threatened by a mysterious, ethereal alien menace called the gnosis.
Xenosaga is a great-looking game, featuring an expressive cast that's realistically animated, though unfortunately the characters' lips don't sync with their speech.
Nevertheless, Xenosaga is an original and memorable entry in a genre that's been mostly stagnant for years now, and the game is clearly a labor of love, filled with many intense and remarkable moments.

Characters and enemies are fluidly animated and there is never any sign of slowdown during the "ultimate" attacks.
When things get really hairy, some characters are also able to summon their 20 ft. giant robots to deal some major damage.
While Xenosaga might lag a little with its incredible amount of cutscenes and movies, it is a beautiful, engaging and thought-provoking RPG.

Additional characters, each with their own subplots, get introduced later, usually in the context of other subplots such as the rights of manufactured humans, the aftermath of cybernetics, secret maneuverings of political officials, and the conflicting actions of two rogue organizations.
While combat in Xenosaga is turn-based fare with a new type of control scheme involving combos, its big welcome innovation for the genre is non-random combat during “dungeon” exploration.
Xenosaga is not as colorful as Final Fantasy X, but that’s more the result of the setting than the quality.

She clings to Ziggy, a resurrected bodyguard who is more machine than man. These characters share little in common outside of their common quest, and a hatred for their parents for giving them such retarded names.
Since Xenosaga II picks up right after the original, it begins in the middle of a story with many questions still left unanswered, so if you haven't played the first game you won't have any idea what is going on.
There aren't always clear-cut strategies and maneuvers, so you'll have to feel out which characters and moves are the most effective against which enemies, instead of relying on the old water-kills-fire elemental equation.

Xenosaga II sports a rather unique battle system, though it is very similar to the first game.
This is somewhat made up for by Double Attacks, which are attacks done by two characters when certain stock and boost conditions are met, but they can be hard to acquire and hard to execute.
However, the length of the game was a little on the short side, and the story's real pay-off could still be a long way off.

AllRPG.com - Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Bose - Review
Xenosaga Episode II did a much better job of mixing movie segments, exploration, combat, and the other elements of gameplay, so that most of the time the game actually felt like you were playing it, not watching it unfold cinematically.
The combat in Xenosaga Episode II is an incredibly in depth system, that is at times fast paced, but also tempered with strategic aspects loaning it a complexity that keeps it exciting and refreshing.
The combat system also encourages players to spend time with each of the characters in the game, as most enemies are weak to certain zones which are only attackable by certain characters, or they are vulnerable to auras that certain characters have.
