  Insta-Chain - Specifications
The spinning of the chain wheels cause the chains to be centrifugally thrown into the "V" formed between the tire and the road in the front or in the rear of the tires, depending on whether the vehicle is going forward or backwards..
The chain wheel has two sealed roller bearings and a grease zerk, which is located on the back side of the wheel and serves as a point of lubrication for the chain wheel bearings.
The chain is attached to the plate by a loop.

GEMPLER'S - How to Install Tire Chains
Arrange chains so that the side with the sharp open hooks is facing down and away from the tire.
Drive tire over the top of chains so that the bow-lever side of the chains is on the outer side of the tire and the "C"-hook side of the chains is on the inner side of the tire.
If cross chains or side chains are loose fitting, open the outer bow lever, move the inner "C" hook to the next tighter link, move the bow lever to the next tighter link, re-close the bow lever, and re-check for tightness.

 www.cyclingnews.com news and analysis
Chains are made up of a repeating series of inner plates, a roller, a chain rivet (also call a "pin"), and outer plates.
New chains can be fitted to the bicycle, although new chains are longer than required and must be shorted to the correct length.
Modern chains are very narrow, and even a small amount of misalignment in rivet as it sits in the side plates could cause the chain to break under load.

Conformations of Perfluorether Sulfonic Acid Side Chains for the Modeling of Nafion®
The intra-atomic distance between C(1) and the acid proton H(26) is taken as a measure of the length of the side chain and in Figure 1 that distance is 7.8Å.
Side chains with folded geometry in such a system would seem to be precluded on the basis of packing and space considerations.
In either case, the length of the side chains has a direct bearing on the separation between ionic domains, where the majority of the water resides, and the nonpolar domains.

How to Change a Chain   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
A worn chain measures just a tad longer between the pins, and does not mesh well with the gears on the bike, all of which are carefully made to mesh perfectly when the pins are half an inch from each other.
The rule of thumb is you should replace your chain BEFORE a foot of chain has stretched to the point where it is a foot and one eight of an inch.
If the chain pin center is 1/8th of an inch beyond the end of the ruler it is past time to change your chain.

[trikes] Losses in power side chain pulleys   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The interesting thing to me is the idea that power loss due to the bending of the chain (not the side bending caused by the variation in chainline as it moves from one cog to another) is independent of the angle of bend.
To be sure, the chain is tensioned at both sides of the pulley, and so there is not probably as much loss due to the chain's rolling and scraping over the pulley teeth as with the chainwheel or cog.
However, except in the case of a special chain with rollers whose outer diameter is greater than that of the ends of the side plates, a toothless pulley rides on the edges of the side plates, not on the rollers, increasing friction as the chain links pivot when they engage and disengage.

Aromatic Side Chain-Functionalized Long Chain Acid Salts: Structural Factors Influencing Their Lyotropic ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Systematic variation of the type of the aromatic side chain and its relative position on the amphiphile as a function of the two headgroups revealed that the position of the side chain on the amphiphile is the most important structural factor influencing the type and stability of the LLC phases formed.
We speculate that the differences in alkyl chain interdigitation and packing efficiency arising from having the aromatic unit as a side chain rather than along the alkyl chains are responsible for this discrepancy.
Side chain amphiphiles lacking an aromatic unit are still able to form the inverted hexagonal LLC phase, so long as the extent of branching and volume of the aliphatic side chain are sufficient.

Side-Chain Crystallization in Alkyl-Substituted Semiflexible Polymers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
A series of comblike semiflexible polymers, in which the alkyl side chains were located nonsymmetrically on the ring, were synthesized by reacting hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) with hexyl, octyl, dodecyl, and octadecyl isocyanates.
However, reorganization of the alkyl side chains was observed as the polymers underwent thermal transitions.
A better packing of the alkyl side chains could be induced by shearing the samples in the molten state followed immediately by slow cooling.

 Side chain protection
It is clear that the carboxyl groups in the side chains of aspartic and glutamic acids must be protected in order to achieve unambiguous activation.
The primary amide functionalities of asparagine and glutamine are not involved in side reactions once the residues have been incorporated into a peptide yet their protection is often recommended to avoid dehydration to the nitrile during activation.
Where Z is used, the side chain functions must be stable to hydrogenation or acidolysis with strong acids.

Previous investigations with respect to liquid crystals have therefore been concerned mainly with materials having a low molecular weight having regard to their applicability in indicating devices.
Recently, however, investigations have also been carried out into polymers which have so-called "mesogenic" groups in the main chain of the polymer (main-chain polymers) or attached side-chain-wise to the main chain of the polymer (side-chain polymers).
As the mesogen there are generally denoted groups which have a pronounced form-anisotropy and especially a rod-like or disc-like structure, since the corresponding low molecular compounds often have liquid crystalline properties [Angew.

Side-chain theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
These side chains can link with a particular toxin, just as Emil Fisher said enzymes must bind to their receptors "like a key in a lock."
Ehrlich theorized that a cell under threat grew additional side-chains to bind the toxin, and that these additional side chains broke off to become the antibodies that are circulated through the body.
It was these antibodies that Ehrlich first described as "magic bullets" in search of toxins.
