Sidewalk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A sidewalk (in North America), or pavement or footpath (in the British Isles and many Commonwealth countries), is a path for pedestrians that is situated alongside a road or formed like sidewalks that are alongside roads (such as a cement foot path through a park).
Sidewalks are more common in modern urban areas, where they may abut the road, than in suburban areas, where they are sometimes separated from the road by a tree lawn (depending on available spaces and prior urban planning).
Sidewalks vary in width, depending on traffic in the area, though are generally wider than 4 ft (1.3 m).

Sidewalk Laws   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The risk on the sidewalk is higher than on the roadway for both age groups, for both sexes, and for wrong-way travel.
The development of extremely wide sidewalks or sidepaths does not necessarily add to the safety of bicycle travel, as wide sidewalks and paths will encourage higher speed bicycle use, magnifying the potential for conflicts at intersections and driveways, and conflicts with pedestrians and fixed objects.
Although riding on sidewalks is generally not illegal, police must discourage this bad practice by all but the youngest children, unless it is done at very slow speeds.

Salon Books | "Sidewalk" by Mitchell Duneier   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Many observers, especially amid the "quality of life" rhetoric of Rudy Giuliani's mayoralty, are likely to view the tables of second-hand bestsellers and discarded fashion magazines -- and the men behind them -- as ugly and undesirable chaos, likely to produce crime and disorder.
Over the course of the five years Duneier spent observing and even working on "the blocks" (as the vendors term their desirable stretch of Village sidewalk), he developed a different view.
While several of the men he introduces to the readers of "Sidewalk" are alcoholics and drug addicts, and some (although not most) are homeless, almost all, as Duneier eloquently puts it, are trying "to live 'better' lives within the framework of their own and society's weaknesses."

He further argues that, despite the apparent disorder created by the vendors, the sidewalk creates an opportunity for income, respect and social support.
In a retort to the influential "broken windows" theory behind community policing, he concludes that policy makers must do better to distinguish between inanimate signs of decline, such as graffiti, and the vendors or panhandlers who strive for better lives.
