	Battle of Johnsonville - Historical Background
		The vessels sunk at Johnsonville, whether tinclad or transport, were either a western-rivers sidewheeler or sternwheeler, both designs "famed for an extraordinary cargo capacity in relation to draft" (Hunter 1949:72).
		While the first steamboats in the west did not differ much structurally from seagoing vessels, over a period of 30 years a vast technical change occurred, adapting the steamboats to the natural and economic conditions of travel along the Mississippi River system.
		Cheaper to build and more effective in low water than sidewheelers and thus more economical, the sternwheeler had established itself as the dominant vessel type on the western rivers by 1880.

		During the long night, groups of Union prisoners surveyed a plan to overpower their Rebel guards, but abandoned any attempt in the face of the old gunboat's state of disrepair.
		The only known picture of the "Uncle Ben" was one drawn by a Union war correspondent which later appeared in the "Harper's Weekly" for Oct. 10, 1863, but the pictures outlined almost no details of the vessel.
