Battle of Johnsonville - Historical Background
The vessels sunk at Johnsonville, whether tinclad or transport, were either a western-rivers sidewheeler or sternwheeler, both designs "famed for an extraordinary cargo capacity in relation to draft" (Hunter 1949:72).
While the first steamboats in the west did not differ much structurally from seagoing vessels, over a period of 30 years a vast technical change occurred, adapting the steamboats to the natural and economic conditions of travel along the Mississippi River system.
Cheaper to build and more effective in low water than sidewheelers and thus more economical, the sternwheeler had established itself as the dominant vessel type on the western rivers by 1880.

 Commercial Steam Vessels
One sidewheeler lost while engaged in the westward passenger trade was the NEW ORLEANS (lost in 1849).
Sidewheelers remained popular for the short distance passenger trade into the early decades of the twentieth century, but they were soon replaced in every other trade by the propeller.
The PEWABIC (sunk by collision with the propeller METEOR in August 1865) is an example of the early adaptation of propellers to the passenger/package freight/bulk cargoes trade.

Captain Mike Hoseman figures the Star's voice carried 10,000 miles this year, and it may be reverberating for generations, as he and his brother, Captain Pete Hoseman, spread a message about the importance of river commerce and water conservation to school children throughout the nation's inland waterways.
The Hosemans camp out on the deck with sleeping bags and cook in a microwave and electric skillet as they pilot their 65-foot sidewheeler Chattanooga Star from small town to small town, touting the importance of the river through a non-profit program they call Rivertrek.
The project is officially two years old, but the educational cruise idea started more than a decade ago, when the two Hosemans decided to augment their commercial dinner cruise and harbor cruise business with road trips, so to speak, to tiny river towns that hadn't seen a paddlewheel on their riverfronts for years.
