The Sidewise Award for Alternate History was established in 1995 to recognize the best alternate history stories and novels of the year.
The award takes its name from the 1934 short story "Sidewise in Time" by Murray Leinster, in which a strange storm causes portions of Earth to swap places with their analogs from other timelines.
At their discretion, the Sidewise Award judges (a panel of five) may elect to recognize an individual or work with a Special Achievement Award.

The Sidewise is not one of the better-known awards; which is a shame, really, not because it's the one I won a couple of times (well, OK, that too) but because it represents an authentic labor of love on the part of the people who do it.
Alternate history is a huge branch of SF nowadays; just reading what's been published has got to be hell's own job - and as for judging, I wouldn't take the job on a salary.
Anyway they're good people and they work hard at what they do and their award deserves to be better known; it is certainly judged more fairly (and competently) than some of the more famous ones, and the nominees are treated with far greater courtesy and respect.

During the nine years of this award’s lifetime so far (counting this year), there’ve been six works by women nominated (three of which were published in 2000), and sixty-four by men, so 91% of the nominated works have been by men, and 87% of the winning works have been by men.
Maybe alternate history shouldn’t be a sub-genre; maybe it should just be another tool in the kit, like mythological motifs and cognitive alienation and giant space squid.

It seems to me that one of the most difficult parts of writing alternate history would be extrapolating the results of a single change, while keeping your story believable, especially considering how many improbable and unbelievable events have occurred in “real” history.
