Greenstreet could be equally memorable just by leaning immensely forward in his chair.
Greenstreet was sixty-one, a veteran of the stage.
Greenstreet lost his Oscar to Donald Crisp for How Green Was My Valley, but The Maltese Falcon earned him a considerable raise from the notoriously tight-fisted Jack Warner.

In a carefully orchestrated ruse conducted by the police with Greenstreet's help, they create the illusion that Bogey's wife Katherine hadn't been killed and was still alive.
Bogart is excellent as Richard Mason in a rather unlikeable role and is particulary good in the scenes where he sets up the deception and where the strange return of his wife seemingly from the grave begins to unhinge his tortured guilt ridden mind.
This film reunites him with his "Maltese Falcon" costar the superb Sydney Greenstreet in a great performance as family friend Dr. Mark Hamilton who is the one who discovers the clue as to what actually happened on the night of the murder.

Sidney Greenstreet, Agnes Moorehead and John Abbott; it falters a bit with the listless line readings of younger stars Gig Young and Alexis Smith.
Young plays a 19th century painter who, while en route to a country estate, encounters a strange, ethereal young lady (Eleanor Parker) who both begs his help and insists that he keep their meeting a secret.
While The Woman in White suffers from excess verbiage, the film is at its best in its shadowy, nocturnal "conspiracy" setpieces and in the scenes with timorous aristocrat John Abbott, to whom every raised voice is a threat to his fragile health.

The Maltese Falcon [1941] - Warner Home Video, dvd   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The dialogue, much of it lifted straight from Hammett, is delivered with whip-crack speed and sneering ferocity, as Bogie faces off against Peter Lorre and Sidney Greenstreet, fends off the duplicitous advances of Mary Astor, and roughs up a cringing "gunsel" played by Elisha Cook Jr.
Although a great star in Europe and the star of a number of 1930s films, Peter Lorre was still something of an unknown quanity in American film; Sidney Greenstreet was a minor stage actor with no screen experience; Elisha Cook was a well-liked but neglected character actor.
Perhaps most startling is the implied sexual relationship between Sidney Greenstreet and the hoodlum Elisha Cook, and the concluding implication that Lorre may well replace Cook in Greenstreet's affections.

He made its journeys through centuries and across continents a wild offscreen picaresque, a spider’s web of intrigue from out of the near as well as the distant past that always threatens to snare Spade just as it has snared the three demented conspirators.
These three -- "Gutman" (Sidney Greenstreet) "Miss Wonderly/O’Shaughnessy" (Mary Astor) and "Joel Cairo" (Peter Lorre) became, in Huston’s hands, lovable gargoyles, creatures as improbable as the Falcon, and each as corroded with greed as the once-shimmering Falcon is coated with cheap enamel.
The studio’s boss, Jack L. Warner, was, to be charitable, a literalist, and the tale of the Falcon’s passage from Malta to San Francisco quickly lost him.

The word "Panama" alone has the power to bring alive visions of Humphrey Bogart plotting with Sidney Greenstreet behind shuttered windows over contraband cargo while  overhead ceiling fans spin and whir through the sultry tropical night.
However, leaving all these visions behind in some resonant memory are the young energetic entrepreneurs that are changing the face and temper of the Panamanian landscape.
Oh yes, there are still shuttered windows, ceiling fans and, of course, those hot sultry nights; and you never know, Peter Lorre just might be lurking in some dimly lit cantina.

True, Lorre's character is “eliminated” early on, and $2,333 was a lot more money in 1942 than it is today, but it was less than one-third of screen newcomer Sidney Greenstreet's salary.
Perhaps the nearly 300-pound Greenstreet was paid by weight—which would put the much thinner Lorre at a disadvantage.
Peter Lorre, born Laszlo Loewenstein in Austria-Hungary (ironic that fellow Austrian Paul Henreid played a character in Casablanca named Victor Laszlo), quickly earned a reputation as a practical joker for the short time he was on the Casablanca set.
