Spivak resigned from the Manitoba legislature in 1979, to run for the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada in the federal riding of Winnipeg-Fort Garry.

Born in Rovno, Poland, Spivak received a B.A., Honors Degree in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of Manitoba.

The following year, Lyon returned to provincial politics to challenge Sidney Spivak for the Progressive Conservative Party's leadership.
Spivak, who had been elected party leader in 1971, was a Red Tory opposed by many of the more conservative figures within his caucus.
The conservative wing of the party consolidated around Lyon's challenge, and he defeated Spivak by 57 votes at a very divisive leadership convention in December 1975.

WINNIPEG - With the passing of Sidney Spivak last month, the Jewish community here lost a political and community leader who won praise from friend and foe alike for always being a gentleman.
Spivak died at age of 74 from complications related to heart surgery.
After the Weir government was defeated in 1969 by the New Democratic Party, Spivak was elected to succeed Weir as leader of the Conservatives in 1971, becoming the first Jewish leader of a major political party in the history of Manitoba.

Involved in many of the major cultural organizations in Winnipeg, Spivak served on the board of governors of the University of Manitoba and as a director of St. Boniface Hospital.
