Thus Sidonie Goossens, who has died aged 105, was a paradox among great harpists: as the principal harp of a radio orchestra, she was unseen by most of her audience, and since that orchestra was the BBC Symphony, she had every opportunity to revel in performing the modern works central to its repertory.
Sidonie started broadcasting in 1924, from the earliest "2LO calling" days of the BBC, in regular programmes from its Savoy Hill studio with the Wireless Quartet, and was a member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from its foundation in 1930 until 1980.
Sidonie appeared with the Goossens Orchestra, formed by her conductor brother Eugene, and the adventurous programming of the BBC ensured that she worked under the batons of Beecham, Wood, Boult, Sargent, Furtwängler, Toscanini, Richard Strauss and Bruno Walter.

Goossens mastered difficult modern and avant garde works on her French Erard harp, and made her orchestral debut in 1921 in the orchestra her brother Eugene formed to play Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring." She and Marie played the harp parts while Leon served as the principal oboe.
A founding member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Goossens was its principal harpist from 1939 to 1981, and a professor of the harp at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for 30 years.

Classical Music :: The Classical Source :: Eugene Goossens — Orchestral Works/Vernon Handley :: Classical Music
Beginning his career as a violinist in Sir Henry Wood’s Queen’s Hall Orchestra, Goossens gravitated to the conductor’s podium and developed a reputation for championing new and neglected music: in 1921, for example, he conducted the British concert premiere of The Rite of Spring.
Goossens was at pains to state that Symphony No.1 has no message and is also without illustration of anything specific.
A 14-page booklet note acts as both a biography of Goossens and a detailed introduction to his music, the work of a cosmopolitan figure who was very much his own man — and, unlike some other conductor-composers, Goossens was not one to ‘cut and paste’ and create an aural memoir of his concert repertoire.

The conductor Guido Cantelli was an admirer of Goossens’ artistry.

True though the statement is, a better description of the disc is the one on the rear insert " The Art of Leon Goossens" as he is featured on each piece and dominates the CD with his two sisters, Sidonie and Marie in minor roles.
On top of this soundest of bases was Goossen's own innate artistry and feel for the music along with his very distinctive and beautifully produced tone that seemed to be his almost as a birthright.
The contribution by the harp playing sisters, Marie and Sidonie came in a charming Serenade by Michael Krein and the simply titled Melody by Morgan Nicholas in which the sinuous oboe line is et against the minimal harp support.
