At the time of the battle, Cadiz was being besieged by the French under the command of Nicolas Jean de Dieu Soult, but Soult had stripped the besieging forces in order to raise a force of 20,000 men to besiege Badajoz.
In an attempt to raise the siege of Cádiz, a mixed Anglo-Spanish force was landed at Tarifa to march up the coast, and attack the siege lines from the rear.
The force (15,000 men) was under the command of the Spanish General Manuel La Pena, with the British contingent (5,000 men) being commanded by Lieutenant-General Thomas Graham, Lord Lynedoch.

Three years later, when Minamoto no Yoshinaka betrayed his clan by storming into Kyoto, setting the Siege of Hojujiden aflame, and kidnapping the Emperor Go-Shirakawa of Japan, he was opposed by many of the monks of Kyoto, including those from Mount Hiei.
Though it was rebuilt, the standing army of warrior monks would never be reconstituted.
