During the Indian Mutiny, the British garrison in Lucknow suffered heavy casualties during a siege (June-Nov., 1857).
Although the siege was broken, the British evacuated the city (Nov.); a year later, when they regained control of India, they reentered.
Lucknow was a focus of the movement (1942-47) for an independent Pakistan.

The Siege of Lucknow proved to be one of the key episodes in the unsuccessful rebellion.
When news of this reached Lucknow, Lawrence recognized the gravity of the crisis and summoned from their homes two bodies of pensioners, one of sepoys and one of artillerymen, to whose loyalty, and to that of the Sikh sepoys, the successful defence of the residency was largely due.
Lucknow was retaken by Campbell on March 21, 1858.

Lucknow is a tiny, former goldmining village located 9 km south-east of Orange on the Mitchell Highway and 250 km north-west of Sydney.
The Lucknow estate was established in 1838 by William Charles Wentworth, a member of the first European party to cross the Blue Mountains.
Some say this was a reference to the good fortune the town proffered (i.e., luck now) while others claim it was named by the mine bookkeeper after the siege at Lucknow in India in which he may have been wounded.

Lucknow was the capital of Oudh state since 1775.
Another interesting aspect of the siege were the Sepoy sharpshooters most famous of whom was one African from Oudh's kings disbanded Army named by the Britishers as Bob the Nailer (because he used to put nails in his musket shots).
An interesting part of the siege was the presence of State prisoners in the Residency.

The operations at the siege of Lucknow from May 1857 to March 1858 involved, in succession, the defence of the residency, the reinforcement of the garrison, the relief and the withdrawal of women and children, and the siege and capture of the city.
Now in February 1858 he was assembling a force of 20,000 men to march on Lucknow, which was held by 130,000 mutineers, many of who were regular sepoys, whilst others were followers of their hereditary chieftains.
With the capture of Lucknow and the dispersal of the rebel forces, operations were concerned with the pacification of the countryside and the elimination of the various separate bodies of mutineers.

The Relief of Lucknow (1859) (figure 6) depicted a famous episode in the war with three of the major heroes being celebrated in England: Colin Campbell, Sir James Outram, and General Sir Henry Havelock.
There was such demand for paintings of the Mutiny that dealers knew they could not possibly send their artists to India to paint and have the painting in time to keep up with the news.
Both paintings are typical of the period, glorifying the British in heroic battles and sieges in heroic stereotypes, gallant poses, and consummate bravery where as natives are portrayed glowering, wide-eyed in terror, and retreating in disarray.
