The fortress was situated on a swampy delta, on the border of Owari and Ise Provinces, at the point where three rivers converge, to the southeast of the modern-day city of Nagoya.
Nagashima was, in fact, not one single fortress, but a number of smaller fortifications surrounding two primary buildings.
Nagashima Castle was built in 1555 by Ito Shigeharu, and seized by the Ikko-ikki shortly afterwards, in much the same way they had seized a number of other daimyo's holdings.

The sieges of Nagashima, taking place in 1571, 1573 and 1574, were part of Oda Nobunaga's campaigns against the Ikkō-ikki, arguably among his greatest enemies.
Nagashima, in Owari Province along Japan's Pacific coast, was a series of fortresses and defensive works controlled by the Ikkō-ikki and surrounding their Ganshōji monastery.
These sieges were executed concurrently with Nobunaga's eleven-year siege against the Ikki's primary fortress of Ishiyama Hongan-ji.
