In 1848 this led him to begin work on an opera called "Siegfried's Death," which incorporated great dramatic scenes of love and battle, and ended with the destruction of the world in what the Vikings called "Ragnarok," the final battle in which all of the nine worlds are destroyed in flame.
This second opera was entitled "The Young Siegfried." But even this assumed a lot of prior knowledge, so Wagner wrote two more operas to set up the situations in the other two.
The fact that we think of Brunhild when we think of the term "opera singer" shows the impact these operas had: they were so powerful, and so well done, that one of their characters has become the "definitive" opera singer in our culture.

Siegfried is perhaps the most taxing tenor role in the Wagner repertoire, not least because he is on stage most of the time.
He was perhaps inspired by the first appearance of Lisa Gasteen as Brünnhilde, whose long wait until the opera's final scene allowed her to channel her full resources into a full-blooded and feisty assumption of the role of the famous Valkyrie.

Siegfried, of course, has to be rather more than that.
Physically speaking, his designers might have helped him a little more in the hair and costume departments, and for all his spirit there is still an element of "old school operatics" about the acting - but the singing is exceptionally accomplished and remarkable for its stamina.
The one thing most Siegfrieds don't or can't convey is a sense of effortlessness.

The "Siegfried" selection, which has Brunnhilde awakened from a years-long spell by the youth whose mother's life she had saved, brings us (among many many other things) the tension between physical attraction in the here-and-now and a larger sense of Fate's frowning on the resulting match.
