Symbian DevZone - Siemens SX1 Developer Opportunities
Siemens with its SX1 have gone even further and thrown away the rulebook to create a radical new layout that sees the keyboard moved up to sit either side of the phone's display.
This is the approach Siemens has taken in providing controls for the SX1's FM radio where the side keys provide access to preset radio stations, in a similar fashion to the preset buttons on a conventional radio.
Siemens are planning to publish a white paper describing the use of the side keys in more detail on their developer web site by the end of July.

Siemens SX1 smart phone | The Register
The upshot is that while the SX1 was a stand-out handset a year ago, it's up against some pretty stiff competition now, primarily Nokia's 6600, the device it most resembles.
Like the 6600, the Siemens handset looks like a mobile that's put on weight, but while the Nokia is clearly the one that ate all the pies, the SX1 hides its spare tyre rather well.
Siemens also bundles an earpiece set, which doubles up as the FM radio receiver's antenna.

Siemens have made the SX1 compatible with most GSM frequencies used throughout the world – including those markets supporting 900 and 1800 MHz frequencies throughout Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific; and 1900 MHz in North America.
Siemens has made it possible to openly transfer phone-based data (multimedia and other files viewable by the Gallery and File Manager utility) with other computing or phone devices via either Bluetooth or IR; and offer full backup/restore and synchronisation capabilities through Bluetooth/data cable/IR – a first for any S60-based device.
Available for some of their other models, Siemens have made the user phone firmware upgrade option possible for the SX1 – which requires the use of the included USB data cable (to connect up with the phone), compatible software/OS installed, and the downloading of the new firmware from the Siemens Mobile web site.

Moving on, the SX1 is devoid of any LEDs to indicate its status, requiring users to check their screen for updates - a user design snafu which is also present on Nokia's Series 60 smartphones, although that doesn't count as a mitigating factor.
There is, however, one problem: Siemens utilizes a proprietary connector for its handsfree kit, so listening to audio with a high quality set of headphones is sadly out of the question.
The Siemens SX1 separates itself from other Series 60 smartphones in several ways, one of which is its ability to hot-swap memory cards.
