Sierra Blanca has a largely Mexican-American population, and the percentage of Spanish-speaking residents is high, as one might expect, along the entire length of the border.
Sierra Blanca's own State Representative's yea vote went unreported in his district for a year and a half; it came to light only because Sierra Blanca grocer Bill Addington traveled to Maine, where a public referendum was held on waste disposal issues, to ask Mainers to vote against poisoning his home.
Texas' and Vermont's arguments for the dump also rest on hydrological arguments, but while the region averages only a few inches of rainfall a year, rains are often "cataclysmic," in the words of one area resident, creating fissures that channel water deeply and unpredictably.

A distinctive feature of Sierra Blanca is the fact that half the town goes by Mountain Time, under which the rest of Hudspeth County and El Paso County were placed by congressional legislation in 1921, while the other half goes by Central Time, as does the rest of Texas.
In 1964 a waitress in a Sierra Blanca cafe told a visiting newspaperman that one tavern was supposedly closed down for a week because it opened in the morning on Central Time and closed at night on Mountain Time.

The Texas and Pacific was unable to finance construction to San Diego, California, and as a result the Southern Pacific was able to build from California to Sierra Blanca, Texas.
This was considerably less than what was originally allocated, as the railway had failed to construct outside of Texas, for which it would have been entitled to a federal land grant, and the much of the state Texas land grant was not allocated due to failure to complete construction on time.
