  Yosemite Association - Newsroom
Fellers and two other scientists will drop a bombshell next month on Valley agriculture when their study tentatively linking pesticides and the amphibian decline is published in an international journal, Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.
Fellers says the losses will not make a big dent and, in any case, they are acceptable in pursuit of a problem affecting frogs and toads in a 400-mile-long mountain range.
Fellers, a California native who earned his doctorate at the University of Maryland, is fascinated with such territorialism in nature.

A California native, Fellers spent part of each summer of his youth hiking in Tuolumne Meadows and elsewhere in the Sierra and became intimately familiar with the region's frogs.
Fellers calls that finding--something of a surprise to the biologists--"particularly worrisome" because recent research suggests that Pacific treefrog eggs can tolerate higher doses of UV radiation better than eggs of other native frogs (see "Horizons," Pacific Discovery Summer 1994).
Perhaps, Drost and Fellers suggest, the mountain yellow-legs became split up into isolated populations occupying fish-free patches, and these small populations, blocked from dispersing or returning to former breeding areas, may now be suffering ecological attrition due to other factors.

In the Sierra Nevada, the historic distribution of the mountain yellow-legged frog was more or less continuous from the vicinity of La Porte in southern Plumas County southward to Taylor and French Joe Meadows in southern Tulare County (Jennings and Hayes 1994).
We conclude that the Sierra Nevada population of the mountain yellow-legged frog is discrete from the southern California population, on the basis of their geographic separation, differences in vocalization, differences between their habitats, and apparent genetic differences.

The frogs of the southern Sierra Nevada are isolated from the frogs in the mountains of southern California by the Tehachapi Mountains and a distance of about 225 kilometers (km) (140 miles (mi)).
The geographic separation of the Sierra Nevada and southern California frogs was recognized in the earliest description of the species by Camp (1917), who treated frogs from the two localities as separate subspecies within the R. boylii group.
Bradford (1991) documented the loss of a Sierra Nevada population of mountain yellow-legged frogs due to the combined effect of ``red- leg'' disease (caused by the freshwater bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila) and predation by Brewer's flbirds (Euphagus cyanocephalus).

jumping frog research institute: in the news
The Yosemite toad was historically endemic to the central Sierra Nevada of California, common from 8,000 to 10,000 feet, with an overall elevation range from 6,400 to 11,300 feet.
Other Sierra amphibian researchers or observers have noted that Yosemite toads were once common in their high Sierra habitat, often occurring in large numbers.
If the pathogens are native to the Sierra Nevada (a question still unanswered for the chytrid fungus), it is highly likely that the pathogens are taking advantage of some sort of environmental stressor that renders the toad more susceptible to disease.

Zweifel (1955) demonstrated that frogs from the high Sierra Nevada and the mountains of southern California were somewhat similar to each other, yet were distinct from the rest of the R. boylii (= boylei) group.
The mountain yellow-legged frog is a near-endemic species to California (primarily restricted to California and a small area of Nevada), historically ranging in distribution from southern Plumas County in northern California to northern San Diego County in southern California.
Bradford's (1989) southern Sierra Nevada Mountain study site, for example, was in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, at high elevations between 2,910 to 3,430 m (9,600 to 11,319 ft).

Effects of Agricultural Pesticides on Translocated Tadpoles | USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center
In recent studies chemical analyses show that highest levels of contaminants in surface water and dry particulate samples in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, CA are pesticides applied in the Central Valley, CA during heavy use periods in summer.
Suspected impacts to be evaluated include: (1) increased mortality of larvae due to direct toxicity, cholinesterase (ChE) inhibition, or physical malformations; (2) reduced survivorship of tadpoles; (3) increased percentages of malformations at metamorphosis; (4) increased genetic damage in exposed larvae (measured by flow-cytometry); and (5) elevated body burdens of pesticides and ChE inhibition.
