Historical Biographies, Nova Scotia: Pierre Du Gua de Monts (c1558-1628).
Thus, it was, that De Monts came ashore at Lehave, Nova Scotia, together with a number of Frenchmen, extending to 75, Champlain and Poutrincourt included; and went on, a year later, to establish the first permanent European settlement at Port Royal.
Because De Monts was unable to enforce his rights along the coast of Acadia against "Basque interlopers"; and further because of court intrigues brought on by jealous merchants back home, De Monts was unable to financially continue.
De Monts continued with his support of the fur trade which included supporting the infant French colony which Champlain started at Quebec in 1608; which support was to continue for a number of years.

Modern History Sourcebook: Samuel de Champlain: The Foundation of Quebec, 1608
HAVING returned to France after a stay of three years in New France, I proceeded to Sieur de Monts, and related to him the principal events of which I had been a witness since his departure, and gave him the map and plan of the most remarkable coasts and harbors there.
Now, after Sieur de Monts had conferred with me several times in regard to his purposes concerning the exploration, he resolved to continue so noble and meritorious an undertaking, notwithstanding the hardships and labors of the past.
Sieur de Monts, for the purpose of defraying the expenses of the expedition, obtained letters from his majesty for one year, by which all persons were forbidden to traffic in pelts with the savages, on penalties stated in the following commission:

Après la mort accidentelle de Isaac de Razilly en 1636, les promesses du régime seigneurial sont brisées, et des conflits à l'intérieur de l'Acadie vont être à l'ordre du jour.
C'est là tout le dilemne de la réalité acadienne: être Français et se voir condamné à une conquête éventuelle par les colons américains ou s'entendre avec les voisins puissants et risquer de devenir un comptoir anglais.

 Samuel de Champlain
The commander, De Chaste, having died in the mean time, his privileges were transferred to Du Guay, Sieur de Monts, who made an engagement with Champlain, with the intention of founding a settlement in Acadia, and they sailed together, arriving at Sable island 1 May, 1604.
He returned to France in 1607, and, having suggested to De Monts the importance of establishing a trading-post on the St. Lawrence, he and Pontgrave were sent out in 1608, and, after reaching Tadoussac, they continued up the St. Lawrence to a place called by the Algonquins Quebec, or the Narrows.
De Monts having lost his influence in consequence of the death of Henry IV., and the merchants who had previously interested themselves in the colonization scheme having concluded to spend no more money on it, Champlain induced the Count de Soissons to take an interest in the project.

Sieur de Monts and his French colonists spent the winter of 1604-05 on a small island near the mouth of a river that flowed into Passamaquoddy Bay, and to both the bay and the island he gave the name St. Croix.
Thus it was proved that the Schoodic was the true St. Croix of De Monts and Champlain, of Sir William Alexander's grant of Nova Scotia, and of the Treaty of 1783.

Likewise, when the Sieur de Monts established his colony (1604) in what was to become known as Acadia, he had with him priests who soon turned their attention to the surrounding tribes.
Bishop De Montmorency-Laval, the first prelate in the colony, entrusted to them the care of a mission established at Quinte Bay on Lake Ontario, for the benefit of the Cayugas, an Iroquois tribe, and many adopted Hurons settled in their midst.
They commissioned the Sieur Pierre Gaulthier de Laverendrye to undertake an expedition in that direction, and in the summer of 1735 Father Jean Pierre Aulneau, S.J., accompanied him to the Lake of the Woods previous to attempting his ultimate mission, the conversion of the Mandans of the Upper Missouri.
