Sig Alert - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SigAlerts originated in 1955 with the Los Angeles Police Department.
By the early 1950s, the rapidly growing number of automobiles in Los Angeles had greatly increased the frequency and severity of traffic accidents and jams.
The LAPD's chief, William H. Parker, was interested though skeptical, warning the inventor, "We're going to name this damn thing Sigalert." More practically, he refused to use it unless the receivers were made available to all LA radio stations -- it could not be a KMPC monopoly.

The word SigAlert eventually became a common and familiar term to Southland drivers, even though few of them were aware of its origins or knew what criteria triggered such an alert.
Ironically, the initial SigAlert — issued as a plea for emergency medical assistance — drew such a heavy response that all the medical personnel rushing to the scene caused an even greater traffic jam than the train derailment itself.
SigAlerts are restricted to traffic incidents these days, but in the beginning they were issued about all manner of items of concern: rabid dogs, a dam about to burst, gas leaks, and even an appeal on behalf of a druggist who had made a potentially deadly error in filling one customer's prescription.

That the Sigalert was the brainchild of a broadcast pioneer named Loyd C. Sigmon.
In fact, the Sigalert, like so many things in Southern California, began as a bid for attention in 1955, when Sigmon was partners with singing cowboy Gene Autry in Golden West Broadcasting.
The official Highway Patrol definition of a Sigalert is any unplanned event that causes the closing of one lane of traffic for 30 minutes or more, as opposed to a planned event like road construction, which is planned separately.

Activated by the dispatcher, the SigAlert transmission--accompanied by a special receiver-activation tone--would notify stations via a red light or a buzzer.
The first such SigAlert, broadcast in 1955, urged medical personnel to respond to an LA train derailment--reportedly causing a traffic jam when so many doctors and nurses showed up to help.
CalTrans says SigAlerts today are limited to any unplanned event that causes the closing of one lane of traffic for at least 30 minutes.

Traffic-obsessed Angelenos have learned to curse the ubiquitous SigAlert, which the CHP describes as "any unplanned event that causes the closing of one lane of traffic for 30 minutes or more, as opposed to a planned event like road construction, which is planned separately."
Sigmon first came up with the idea in 1955, building a contraption that would allow the LAPD to use a special frequency to alert radio stations of a traffic emergency.
It had the unintended effect of CAUSING a traffic jam, as the message was sent out requesting any available doctors and nurses to respond to a train derailment outside L.A.'s Union Station.

Those of you who live in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas may have wondered where we got the name SigAlert.
For those of you in other parts of the state, country, or world, a SigAlert is what we call an announcement by the California Highway Patrol when traffic is particularly bad on a particular stretch of the freeway.
Now, for you trivia buffs out there, SigAlerts are affectionately named after Loyd C. Sigmon who, in 1955, invented a device that allowed the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department to notify his radio station of any traffic alerts so he would have a competitive advantage over other local radio stations.
