Sigma Chi is one of the largest international all-male college social fraternities, with chapters at universities in Canada and the United States.
Sigma Chi was founded in 1855 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio when members split from Delta Kappa Epsilon.
As of 2006, Sigma Chi Fraternity consists of 213,535 living brothers in 218 chapters at colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada, and 145 alumni groups and alumni brothers around the world.

A member of Sigma Chi who was an active at one university and then transfers to another university where there is a chapter can "affiliate" with that chapter as long as he was in good standing when he left his former chapter.
Sigma Chi, as well as most national fraternities, require their chapters to conduct dry rush and to follow the rules set up by local Interfraternity Council and school administration.
To be initiated into Sigma Chi, a pledge must (1) be in good standing academically and (2) fulfill the requirements of pledgeship required by his chapter and the General Fraternity.

In 1857, William Lewis Lockwood, one of the seven founders of our Fraternity, penned "We should endeavor so to raise ourselves that to say of a man, 'He is a Sigma Chi' shall be synonymous with, 'He is a liberally educated, high-minded, pure and noble man.' Such are some of the objects of our Society.

Throughout the course of the week we raise thousands of dollars to be put toward The Children’s Miracle Network as well as the Kevin Cleary Foundation (a Wisconsin Sigma Chi alumni who was killed in Tower One on September 11 th, 2001).

A few hours later the seven new Sigma Chis, perhaps somewhat the worse for the ordeal but exceedingly happy, returned to Hobart College to labor for the success of their new chapter and of Sigma Chi.

 SIGMA CHI  FRATERNITY
The lessons of the founding of Sigma Chi are revealed in three important pieces of the Founders' legacy.
The flag is rectangular, the length being one and one-half times the width, the upper half being blue, the lower half being old gold, with a white Sigma Chi cross in the center standing upright and parallel to the lesser sides.
The coat-of-arms, or crest, is a Norman Shield of blue bearing a white Sigma Chi cross, the shield being surmounted by a scroll in white and blue and a crest of an eagle's head holding a key of gold, the public motto, "In Hoc Signo Vinces" being placed below the shield on a scroll.

 Sigma Chi/Brief History of Fraternities/Phi Beta Kappa
(Sigma Phi Epsilon and Alpha Tau Omega are examples.) Expansion stopped for several years, but in 1817, a chapter was installed at Union College in Schenectady, New York, which eventually led to the founding of more fraternities structured similarly to Phi Beta Kappa.
In 1825, Kappa Alpha Society (considered the oldest college fraternity as they now exist) and in 1827, Sigma Phi and Delta Phi were founded, and the Union Triad was born.
Sigma Chi ranks second in total initiates and fourth in number of undergraduate chapters.

He took the words to his Sigma Chi Brother F. Dudleigh "Dud" Vernor, who was practicing the organ in the campus chapel; Vernor completed the music that day.
