  Teaching Sign Language
Sign language builds on the natural gestures we all use such as "bye," "hi," and "come here" to create a visual message that accompanies the spoken word.
Research has shown that children who have learned sign language decrease their use of gestures and signs spontaneously as they develop the ability to speak clearly and are understood by others.
For sign language to have meaning and be powerful to your child, it is essential everyone who is important in your child's life knows the signs that your child is using and understands.

The Use of Signs by Children with Down Syndrome
Signs may be useful for children with Down syndrome for a variety of reasons.
Manual signs may provide a way of communicating a message at a time when the child does not yet have the oral motor coordination necessary to say a word.
Signing can provide a means of taking part in these conversational exchanges, and can move the child into the arena of learning language and participating in the goings on of others.

Gesture and Sign Language and Human Evolution
But when a sign language word is analysed as what it is and not as a homologue of a spoken word, two components appear: what is active (a hand or hands or other body part) and what it does (the motion or action of that part).
The third is that for children who progressed in speech as well as sign, the progress in sign language appeared crucial as a foundation for the changes in speech skills: The sign progress predated and appeared to guide or support the spoken language advances.
In contrast, the major articulators for sign (the hands) move relatively slowly such that the duration of an isolated sign is about 1,000 milliseconds; the duration of an average spoken word is more like 500 milliseconds.

 Secure Beginnings: Signing Together Classes
Signing takes advantage of that level of comprehension, and babies' natural curiosity and wish to grow, and gives them tools to leverage that comprehension into something useful.
The SIGN with your BABY program suggests that beginning at around 6-7 months is optimal; your baby's memory is ready to learn signs at around 6 months, and the motor skills necessary come along at about 7 months.
Also, ASL signs can give a common language to grandparents who don't share a spoken language, making it easier to connect with their grandchild.

Total Communication Options for Children with Down Syndrome in the Context of Hanen Programs for Parents
Reasons for introducing signs are well summarised in this study - "to improve oral language, provide some form of communication and alleviate a child's frustration." When parents stopped using signs it was because their child started talking or became more intelligible, reaffirming the notion of signs as a "bridge" to speech.
Perhaps some of the caution around introducing signs comes from studies that were not as conclusive in their support for the "bridge" hypothesis (Jago et al, 1984; Romski and Ruder, 1984; Weller and Mahoney, 1983).
While the majority of research seems to favour the use of signs, all the research in the world may not be enough to sway the parent whose philosophical stance is that children do best with an oral-only approach.

Somewhere along the way, either during the evolution of languages in general or during the natural development of signed languages, raised eyebrows, a tilted forward head and widening of the eyes was emancipated from its primary motivation.
