Signal Hill is a hill which overlooks the city of St.
The final battle of the Seven Years' War in North America was fought in 1762 at the Battle of Signal Hill, in which the French surrendered St. John's to the British under the command of Lt. Colonel William Amherst.
Amongst its popular attractions are the Signal Hill Tattoo, showcasing the Royal Newfoundland Regiment of foot, circa 1795, and the North Head Trail which grants an impressive view of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding coast.

Newfoundland and Labrador (French: Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, Irish: Talamh an Éisc agus Labradóir, Latin: Terra Nova) is a province of Canada, the tenth to join the Confederation.
On entry into Canada in 1949, the entire province was known as Newfoundland, but since 1964, the province's government has referred to itself as the "Government of Newfoundland and Labrador", and on December 6, 2001, an amendment was made to the Constitution of Canada to change the province's official name to "Newfoundland and Labrador".
Newfoundland received a colonial assembly in 1832, which was and still is referred to as the House of Assembly, after a fight led by reformers William Carson, Patrick Morris and John Kent.

Signal Hill rises above the entrance of St. John's Harbour and because of its location, was a natural site for signal stations and fortifications protecting the harbour and the city below.
As early as 1704, flag signals were flown from the summit of Signal Hill to inform St. John's of approaching ships, both friendly and hostile.
Also of interest on Signal Hill is the Lookout Trail which has been constructed along the perimeter of the 19th century fortifications.

There are six active dimension stone quarries in Newfoundland and Labrador: a slate quarry in eastern Newfoundland; three granite quarries in central Newfoundland; a sandstone quarry on the west coast; and an anorthosite (labradorite-granite) quarry in Labrador.
On the northern Labrador coast, near Nain, anorthosite "labradorite-granite" is quarried from the bedrock in massive pieces, then shaped into blocks weighing 10 to 30 tonnes, approximately the size of the family car!
Labradorite is the provincial mineral for Newfoundland and Labrador.

If you ask anyone in Newfoundland what one of the most recognizable landmarks in the province was, they'd probably tell you Signal Hill, or more specifically, Cabot Tower.
Cabot Tower was built in 1897 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's discovery of Newfoundland, and Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.
Cabot Tower is now the centre of the Signal Hill National Historic Park, Canada's second largest historic park, with walking trails, and an interpretation centre where the visitor can hear very interesting stories about the area.
