Railway signal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A signal is a mechanical or electrical device that indicates to train drivers information about the state of the line ahead, and therefore whether he or she must stop or may start, or instructions on what speed the train may go.
Searchlight signals have one permanently-illuminated lamp, the aspect colour being selected by a moving vane operated by an electric motor that positions the appropriate colour filter in front of the lens.
This type of signal does use a (parabolic) reflector and thus lower power lamps and a less directional lens system are used since there is a far greater percentage of the light available to be directed down the tracks towards the driver of the oncoming train.

Signal box - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A disused signal box at Patrickswell, County Limerick, Ireland
A signal box/cabin (in Britain and other Commonwealth countries) or interlocking/signal tower/cabin (in North America), is a building from which railway signals and switches or points are controlled.
Originally all signalling was done by mechanical means; cables or rods, connected at one end to the signals and turnouts and at the other to levers in the signal box, ran alongside the railway.

box thoery: the suppressed sync signal is trans- ved from the first few lines of video mitted normally in the first few lines of video, which, incidentally, are transmitted normally.
as a result, a signal recieved inverted is now correct, and a frame of video 'seen' as normal is not routed through the inverter, and sent straight to the rf modulator, which retransmits the corrected signal to the tv set, usually on channel 3.
hence, a stolen box woll not work in another city, where it cannot be turned off by the normal method due to the fact that some one may already be using a box contain- ing the same security code.

Drawings of the signal box in its latter days by Pat English can be found in the Oakwood Press book No 184 of the Helston Branch Railway by Stanley C. Jenkins.
The author believes this photo to date from the late 1930s or early 1940s, and the Signal Box steps had been repositioned to be perpendicular to the tracks.

Once a box is highlighted, you can move it by placing the mouse arrow over it, holding down the left mouse button and while holding the button down, dragging the box to a new location.
Next, click inside the small triangle on the right side of the signal generator box and while holding the mouse button down, slide the mouse arrow to the triangle on the left side of the filter box.
You may change the name of the signal, the gain, the pulsewidth, the period and the time shift by typing the desired value into the appropriate box.

This connection was not signalled for passenger traffic and was controlled originally by a local 1-lever ground-frame, which was locked by a key held by the LandSWR signalman.
The signal diagram for the period circa-1960 is probably little different from that for the preceding three decades.
It is likely that these signals were used solely to make "request stops" for the passenger trains, in a similar manner to the original arrangements described at Latchley.

The top half of the new box was originally part of Stratford Southern box in London, which was a most unusual structure in that it was supported on legs to allow a siding to pass underneath.
Volunteers arrived at first light to begin preparing the box for lifting, removing anything that might get damaged and attaching straps to hold the signal box square as it is lifted.
The box was therefore covered in scaffolding, to enable those involved with the project to work on the roof in safety.

Signal evolution is biased and constrained by how these receiver processes can work, as well as by the biophysics of signal generation, emission and transmission (Box A).
The ways signals are initially processed and coded in the sense organs for subsequent processing by the brain sets limits on what sorts of signals can be received and the types of information they can transmit34373839, but can result in unexpected biases towards new signals15.
Signal structure can affect the ease of classification depending upon the evolution of deception53, as well as passive interference or jamming from other males34.

For two of the boxes modelled, a full sequence of trains is available and the track circuits on the diagram will light up as you give permission for the trains to proceed.
Naturally in a real box the track diagram is a coloured drawing so making it change to indicate the lie of the points was not strictly accurate, so removing this facility is not a real detriment.
The signal box lever frame, block instruments, track diagram, track circuiting, working timetable and train register are all displayed and kept updated by the computer.

Distant signals were warning semaphore signals that told the driver what the state of the next home signal was.
Distant signals were usually painted yellow with a fl chevron (v-shape), and the arms had a V-shaped notch cut in the end of the arm.
The signal contained a lamp, and moving the arm would also move a coloured piece of glass in front of the lamp, so the signal could be identified at night by the colour of the light.

If you have used an Orange Box, or downloaded S.O.B. from www.artofhacking.com, then you know that its usefulness is limited by the fact that the signal cannot be sent to the target line until after they have answered the phone.
You need to be sure that your magenta box will ring the phones on the line, that your ringing cadence is convincing, and that your Orange Box signal is interpreted correctly by the target Caller ID receiver.
This could be done using the techniques of the Beige Box, which involves connecting to an external demarcation point with alligator clips, or using variations such as the Mega Box, which involves climbing telephone poles to reroute the line to a spare pair somewhere else.

A breakout box is a device that lets you view the logic state of many, or all, of the signal leads, as well as providing some ability to interrupt some (or all) of the signal leads.
If the breakout box is allowed to hang freely, the weight of the breakout box can cause damage to the pins on the connectors (of the breakout box and the equipment it is hanging from), leading to reliability problems later on.
The main reliance is that the signal ground is on pin 4 of the RJ-45, and a switch is used to connect ground to pin 5 for use with Cisco devices.

Orange Boxing / Caller ID Hacking FAQ
An Orange Box is defined as a device that emulates the Caller ID signal that is transmitted to a telephone line from its Central Office following the beep of an incoming Call Waiting call.
Since it is the receiving end that has to have a compatible Caller ID box and not the transmitting end, it is possible in theory for any phone, cellular or landline, anywhere in the world, to transmit an Orange Box signal successfully.
The Vermilion Box is an encapsulation of several techniques that involves getting physical access to the target line, disconnecting it from the telephone company network, and then reconnecting it to a line emulator that powers the phones, rings the ringers, and sends a fake Caller ID message between rings.
