		Significant other (sig ot or SO) is a gender-blind, politically correct term to refer to a person's partner in an intimate relationship without disclosing or presuming anything about his or her marital status or sexual orientation.
		In social psychology a significant other is the parent, uncle, grandparent, or teacher - the person that guides and takes care of a child during primary socialization.
		This usually takes about six or seven years, and after that the significant other is no longer needed, the child moves on to a general other which is not a real person, but an abstract notion of what society deems good or bad.

		The sophomore release is the only time the band made any sort of artistic statement, varying slightly from their power-chord rap-metal attack that has been done to death.
		This is where the artistic merit comment from earlier comes in -- future LB discs deal with anger at the "media dykes," Britney and the world in general, but this one is the only time where the band came close to being relevant.

		Given the accomplished sense of orchestration that informs individual songs, it's somewhat ironic that as an entire album, Significant Other is something less than the sum of its parts.
		While Significant Other is more sonically diverse than its predecessor, it shares the same narrow range of feeling.
		The only song on the album that is remotely celebratory, something that could be listened to at a party that consisted of more than a couple guys, a couple 12-packs and their grudges, is the album's second track, "Just Like This," with its dance-friendly "phat-ass beats" and relatively docile lyrics.

		Significant Other is more creative than Korn's Follow the Leader, less obnoxious than Eminem's Slim Shady LP and vastly more interesting than Bizkit's one-dimensional Three Dollar Bill.
		He switches his role from aggressor to victim and back, angrily expressing himself in "Break Stuff" ("I pack a chain saw/I'll skin your ass raw") and then singing almost lullabylike in the quasi-ballad "Rearranged."
