	Sigurd I of Norway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		During Sigurd's reign, the tithe (a 10% tax to benefit the church) was introduced in Norway.
		Sigurd also founded the diocese of Stavanger because he was denied divorce by the bishop in Bergen, so he simply installed another bishop further south.
		Sigurd died in 1130 and was buried in the Hallvardskirken church in Oslo.

		Harald Gille was killed in 1136 by Sigurd Slembe, another royal pretender who had himself proclaimed king in 1135.
		Magnus fell during the battle, and Sigurd Slembe was captured and killed.
		During the civil wars period of Norwegian history (1130-1240) there were several interlocked conflicts of varying scale and intensity.

		Ole Kristian Ruud conducting the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra performing Edvard Grieg's Sigurd Jorsalfar, incidental music for baritone, male choir and orchestra, Op.
		This time, the theme is music inspired by the composer's countryman, the poet Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (1832-1910), himself greatly inspired by ancient Norwegian heroic poetry.
		Hagegård is soloist on two more works on the disc, of which Landkjenning (Land Sighting) also employs a Bjørnson text based on an incident in the life of Viking king Olav Trygvason, who on returning by ship from England in 995, decides to build the great cathedral of Nidaros (the present Trondheim).

		As the number of composers brought to mind might suggest, there is little here that is instantly recognisable as Grieg; indeed, the introduction to Sigurd Jorsalfar sounds, more than anything, like a missing page from Smetana’s Ma Vlast.
		The one piece on the disc reminiscent of nobody but Grieg himself is the funeral march, written for his friend Rikard Nordraak.
		On this evidence, conductor Ole Kristian Ruud deserves the acclaim he has received from the Scandinavian press and, as the whole enterprise is captured in excellent sound (the disc is a fine advert for the SACD/Surround Sound format), it makes a worthy addition to BIS’s ongoing Grieg series.

		The larger Grieg works--the Peer Gynt and Sigurd Jorsalfar extracts--are from Decca masters, played by the English Chamber Orchestra under Raymond Leppard.
		There's a case for suggesting that "In the Hall of the Mountain King" or the "Hommage March" (from Sigurd Jorsalfar) require full symphonic forces to do them justice, but Leppard balances his much smaller resources carefully, ensuring that every strand of detailing is plainly audible.
