Written in 1934 and dedicated to Sigurd Rascher (b.1907), it also precedes the most significant saxophone concertos of the entire saxophone repertoire; Alexander Glazonouv's (1865-1936) Saxophone Concerto was premiered in November 25, 1934 in Nyköping, Sweden, with Sigurd Rascher as soloist, to whom this concerto was dedicated.
Rascher's initiative, on the other hand, led to the composing of a concerto which established itself as one of the most significant pieces of the Swedish saxophone repertoire.

Rascher begins his method by explaining the concept of maintaining uniformity of tone character and volume on all notes, and that the ability to control tone production within the standard range is essential to the development of a useful altissimo register.
Rascher’s concept of “tone imagination” suggests that while playing a note on the saxophone, one is to internally imagine all aspects of the following note.
Rascher stresses that these are not the only possible fingerings for tones higher than ‘top F’ (Rascher 1941).

It is Rascher who deserves the singular credit for demonstrating that the alto saxophone can produce a continuous chromatic scale of four octaves, from its low Bb (concert Db).
While we are noting the contributions of Rascher it must also be added that his influence on the saxophone repertoire has been profound - we need only mention the concertos by Ibert and Glazounov, the Hindemith duet, etc.
However, the best testimony to Rascher's musicianship and unique altissimo skill is preserved on a the stunning LP recording he made in about 1950 on the Concert Hall label with pianist David Tudor.

A few years ago when I had begun my dissertation, a gentleman wrote to me asking why somebody was not (or had not at the time) written a dissertation or biography on the life of Rascher.
At the time, I replied to him that Rashcer's heir apparent, Carina, might be the best authority on such a task, or that if not there must surely be others working at that task.
Now that Sigurd Rascher has passed (and it will be to the regret of any serious saxophonist that he has), perhaps it is time to see such as a fitting tribute.
