Sikh forenames are unisexual; the "Singh" and "Kaur" monikers are hence useful in clarifying the person's sex.

The Sikh Granth, a Holy Book, is Central to Faith
In a Sikh gurdwara (literally 'gate to the Guru'), or service, it is opened after traditional hymns are sung, or recited for an hour or more by professional ragis (musicians) or community members.
The 10th and last of the Sikh masters, Guru Gobind Singh, instructed his Sikhs before his death in 1708, to revere the Holy Granth as their guide telling them that in it rests the divine spirit of all the ten Gurus.

A Sikh couple had to abandon their wedding after a group of Sikh protesters stormed the hotel where the ceremony was being held alleging that they had shown disrespect towards their holy book, the police said on Monday.
The group claimed that the Sikh holy book should not have been brought to a place where alcohol, meat and cigarettes were available.
The priest fell to the ground in a scuffle with the protestors and the gang fled with the Guru Granth Sahib, which was to be used in the service and took it to a gurdwara in Slough.

It is the holiest book of the Sikh community in Afghanistan's eastern Jalalabad and rests under its special cover in a gurdwara, or Sikh temple, down a twisting network of alleys in the heart of the western city of Peshawar.
The book, the Guru Granth Sahib, was sent out of Afghanistan for safekeeping by the dwindling Sikh community, fearing for the future of the country as U.S. warplanes rained bombs and missiles on the ruling Taliban.
Sikh leaders estimate about 1,000 to 2,000 Sikhs and Hindus lived in Afghanistan before the current crisis, down from 50,000 before Afghanistan spiralled into strife over two decades ago.

A copy of Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikhs, was retrieved from a submerged gurdwara in New Orleans in the United States, where hurricane Katrina caused large-scale destruction, after an over 22-hour rescue operation by Sikh volunteers.
The holy book could not be removed from the gurdwara before mandatory evacuation orders were issue, the group said in a statement.
The United Sikhs rescue squad comprising Hardayal Singh and Bhai Nirmal Singh teamed up with air force rescue experts David Cruz and Tom Bausmas of SRT to remove the Guru Granth Sahib in an operation that lasted over a period of 22 hours and ended on September 7, the statement said.
