Wright was appointed brigadier general of the state militia in 1827.

JOSEPH WRIGHT (1734-1797), styled Wright of Derby, English subject, landscape and portrait painter, was born at Derby on the 3rd of September 1734, the son of an attorney, who was afterwards town-clerk.
Wright's portraits are frequently defective in drawing, and without quality or variety of handling, while their flesh tints are often hard.
An exhibition of Wright's works was brought together at Derby in 1883, and twelve of his pictures were shown in the winter exhibition of the Royal Academy in 1886.

Wright opposed the distribution among the states of the surplus Federal revenues, supported the independent treasury scheme of Van Buren, maintained in reference to the abolition of slavery the right of petition and the sovereignty of congress over the territories in 1838, and voted for the tariff of 1842 and for the annexation of Texas.

Wright’s participation on Jackson’s behalf offered little benefit to the President because Wright was not a very effective speaker, which is why Wright had initially left Jackson’s defense to other senators who were better orators.
Daniel Webster, considered one of the greatest orators ever to sit in the Senate, called Silas Wright “the most inferior man in debate that sat in the Senate.” While that evaluation may be overly harsh, he certainly had it right when he placed Wright among the worst speakers in Congress.
