 Silbo
The Silbo Gomero ("Gomeran whistle") is a whistled language spoken by inhabitants of La Gomera in the Canary Islands to communicate across the deep valleys (barrancos) that radiate through the island (Busnel and Classe 1976: 1).
Invented by the original inhabitants of the island, the Guanches, and "spoken" also on el Hierro, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria, Silbo was adapted to Spanish by the last Guanches and adopted by the Spanish settlers in the 16th century and thus survived.
Manuel Carreiras of the University of La Laguna and David Corina of the University of Washington published research on Silbo in 2004 and 2005 arguing that Silbo was understood by the brain in much the same way as a spoken language.

Silbo Gomero is a whistled language from La Gomera, one of the smaller islands of the Canary archipelago.
Until about twenty years ago, Silbo Gomero was used as a means of long-distance communication by all the inhabitants of the mountainous centre of the island, to convey a wide variety of messages (indeed any message at all, according to La Gomera residents).
The aim of our studies of Silbo Gomero is to reveal the cognitive and neural underpinnings of this whistled language, using brain imaging techniques such as fMRI and ERPs to discover, for instance, lexical or semantic processing.

Apparently Silbo is articulated through whistling instead of the employment of one's vocal chords, by means of which one can use the language's four vowels and four consonants to form upwards of 4,000 words.
It used to be used to communicate over distances as long as two miles (7,040 cubits), but the language has been falling out of favour ever since the invention of the telephone.
From 1999, children in the schools of the island where this language was used have been educated in it for some small, token amount of time per week, and that is probably fine in the interest of history education, but you should be able to smell what's coming next.
