Before Kerr even settles down to talk about silent film comedy, he presents in his Part One, titled "The Silent Camera," a masterful analysis of the art of silent film, which he calls "the fantasy of fact." He explains how the nature of the camera, being a machine, is to reproduce fact.
Silent comedy, on the other hand, reached unparalleled heights in the silent era precisely because of the "fantasy of fact." The rest of the book, covering the history of silent comedy and the careers of its major figures, explains exactly why.
Relating the development of film comedy chronologically, he jumps back and forth between the three, minutely tracing the evolution of their styles, from their short films through the features, describing not only how they were funny, but why.

 Silent film
Since silent films could not take advantage of synchronized sound for dialogue, titles were edited in to clarify the on-screen situation to the cinema audience or to add critical dialog.
Overacting in silent films was often a habit that actors transferred from the stage, and directors who understood the intimacy of the new medium discouraged it.
Most silent films were also shot at slower speeds than sound films (typically 16 to 20 frames per second as opposed to 24), so that unless special techniques are used to show them at their original speeds they can appear unnaturally fast and jerky, which reinforces their unnatural appearance.

 Comedy Films
Comedy was ideal for the early silent films, as it was dependent on visual action and physical humor rather than sound.
Comedy was transformed, however, and began to be refined as an art form, with new themes, elements, and written characterizations, and comedic humor was now being derived from clever dialogue.
Their comedy was a mixture of slapstick, sophisticated verbal comedy (often absurd and risque), zany anarchistic disrespect for the establishment, nonsensical action, and inspired buffoonery.
