The historical capital of Czech Silesia, Opava is now in the Moravian-Silesian Region and has a population of 59,843 as of January 1, 2005.
After the majority of Silesia was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia during the War of the Austrian Succession begun in 1740, the remaining Silesian territory still under the control of the Habsburg Monarchy became known as Austrian Silesia with its capital in Opava (1742-1918).
From 1938-1945 Opava was occupied by Nazi Germany.

Outstanding among ITF members who perseveringly supported this form of study at various negotiations with the Ministry of Culture and the Accreditation Commission of the Czech Government, was the founder of the Department of Photography at the Prague FAMU Prof.
Its graduates should be able in practice to master all the principal domains of photography, be able to take their bearings in photographic and computer techniques, the history of photography and art and in further theoretical subjects and should also be capable authoritatively to speak and write on photography.
All that goes to show that the Institute of Creative Photography, after just thirteen short years of attachment to the Silesian University, now belongs among well-established and respected photographic schools and is known to professionals far beyond the frontiers of the Czech Republic.

Fifteenth Year of the Institute of Creative Photography, Silesian University in Opava In former years the Institute of Creative Photography at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Silesian University, Opava, has marked the anniversary of its founding by organizing large exhibitions of student work.
The biggest such stock-taking so far, which presented final-year projects from the years 1998-2003, was held in the House of Art and the Minorite friary in Opava and later, in a reduced form, in Ostrava, Bratislava, Poznań, Kaunas, and Cheb, in 2003.
The exhibition "Landscapes by ICP Students," first presented in February and March in the House of Art in Opava, and now in Brno, presented, in a selection by Jan Pohribn?, various conceptions of traditional and untraditional landscape photography.
