In the War of the Schmalkaldic League in 1546/1547, the Emperor Charles V defeated the Protestant rulers.
The war ended in 1648 with the Peace of Westphalia, signed in Münster and Osnabrück: German territory was lost to France and Sweden and the Netherlands left the Holy Roman Empire.
The war was decided in favour of the Prussians, who carried the decisive victory at the Battle of Königgratz, under the command of Helmuth von Moltke.

In the early Silesian wars, heavy or reserve guns th otected the deployment of the army and endeavoured to th epare for the subsequent advance by firing upon the hostile W)ops; the battalion guns remained close to the infantry, pc companied its movements and assisted in the fire fight.
When war broke out, a train of artillery was in ~anized, consisting of a certain number of field (or siege) guns, ar tnned by garrison gunners; and when peace was proclaimed (J e train was disbanded, the materiel being returned into store, H d the gunners reverting to some fort or stronghold.

The Silesian Piasts encouraged German colonization of their lands, the larger part of which became thoroughly Germanized, and in the early 14th cent.
The political division of the Silesian industrial district was carried out so arbitrarily that the boundaries often cut through mines; some workers slept in one country and worked in another.
After World War II the pre-1938 boundaries were restored, but all formerly Prussian Silesia E of the Lusatian Neisse was placed under Polish administration (a small section of Lower Silesia W of the Neisse was incorporated with the East German state of Saxony).

The German colonization was vigorously carried on and towards the end of the thirteenth century Lower Silesia was mainly German, while in Upper Silesia the Slavs were in the majority.
In the seventeenth century Silesia obtained great renown through the two Silesian schools of poetry, the chief of these poets being Martin Opitz, Friedrich von Logau, and Andreas Gryphius.
At the close of the three Silesian wars (1740-2, 1744-5, 1756-63) the greater part of Silesia belonged to Prussia.
