Patent 5236680: Preparation of amorphous silica-alumina particles by acid-treating spherical P-type zeolite particles crystallized from a sodium aluminosilicate gel
The spherical particles of amorphous silica or silica-alumina according to the present invention are prominently characterized in that although the particles are composed of amorphous silica or silica-alumina, the particles have a definite spherical shape and the surfaces of the spherical particles are notched.
The spherical particles of amorphous silica or silica-alumina according to the present invention are relatively dense, and the bulk density is generally in the range of from 0.2 to 1.2 g/ml and especially in the range of from 0.4 to 1.0 g/ml, though the bulk density differs to some extent according to the particle size.
In the spherical particles of amorphous silica or silica-alumina according to the present invention, the primary particles size (the particle size according to the electron microscope photo method, that is, 2r1) is in the range of from 0.1 to 20.mu.m, especially from 0.3 to 10.mu.m.

Earth Alliance Particle Beam Cannon: Babylon 5 Tech-Manual.
All this considered it is a valid and relatively small approximation, to say that Earth's crust is composed of 65% of silica and 35% Alumina, both by weight - basically we substitute the properties of Alumina for the minority of the remaining compounds and retain the value for silica.
By these numbers most of the crust is composed of silica/ (silicon and oxygen) and Alumina/ (aluminum and oxygen), with only about a fifth left for the compounds of the other elements.
Alumina, or aluminum oxide, its chemical formula is Al2O3, is the other most common mineral in Earth's crust, it is the component of a variety of minerals.

 Column Chromatography
Silica gel and alumina are the only column chromatography adsorbents used in the CU organic chemistry teaching labs; please refer to the references for information on other column chromatography adsorbents.
Compounds interact with the silica or alumina largely due to polar interactions.
Alumina is quite sensitive to the amount of water which is bound to it: the higher its water content, the less polar sites it has to bind organic compounds, and thus the less “sticky” it is. This stickiness or activity is designated as I, II, or III, with I being the most active.

 OhioLINK ETD: ALSYOURI, HATEM
This thesis investigates the synthesis of ordered mesoporous silica and alumina materials with unique microstructures and different morphologies using novel approaches based on template-assisted synthesis and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques and their potential use in polymer reaction application.
Silica plugs grow with thickness of 0.5 mm and have a mesoporous structure.
Gas transport in silica fibers is governed by Knudsen and surface diffusion mechanisms.

 Outline of the Grid Method
The 3 main variables in the base glaze are fluxes, alumina and silica.
For example, a glance at a fired standard grid tile reveals immediately the effect of altering alumina or silica on a given set of fluxes.
Usually at least one of the flux materials chosen for a set will contain alumina and silica like this.

The silica-alumina composite membranes showed very high selectivities toward hydrogen : the flux ratio of hydrogen over nitrogen exceeded 100.
The silica membranes formed by CVD have very high selectivities toward hydrogen, but they suffer from poor stability.
And the deposition rate of the silica layer are relatively slow.

 40. : Alumina-doped silica gradient-index (GRIN) lenses by Slurry-based Three-dimensional Printing (S-3DP [trademark] )
Two different approximately parabolic dopant concentration profiles, which have maximum alumina concentrations of 1.63 mol% and 2.50 mol%, are printed into silica powder beds using S-3DP [trademark].
The samples with maximum alumina concentration of 1.63 mol% have been sintered into optical transparency at 1650anddeg;C for 30 minutes in a vacuum furnace (5andtimes;10-6 torr) while an additional deh ydration process before sintering was required for the samples with maximum alumina concentration of 2.50 mol%.
The magnifying effects of GRIN lenses with profiles of 1.63 mol% and 2.50 mol% alumina were observed, yielding effective focal lengths of 10 cm and 6.1 cm, respectively.

 Patent 4039474: Silica-alumina catalysts
After successive filtering and spray drying steps the final purified product is a powder where the silica content is 55 to 95% by weight (dry basis) and alumina the balance.
In orthosilicate, for comparison the mole ratio is 2Na.sub.2 O:SiO.sub.2 and in meta silicate the mole ratio of alkali to silica is 1:1.
To the above precipitated silica gel, 6,420 mls of plant concentrated alum (25% aqueous solution) were added over a period of 17 minutes.

 Nanotechnology: Developing Molecular Manufacturing
A complete set of reactions for vacuum deposition of arbitrary shapes in a covalent solid has not yet been worked out and verified, but there are quite a few covalent solids that would be useful to build due to their excellent material properties, including diamond, silica, alumina (sapphire), and cubic boron nitride.
Silica can be deposited from water; this deposition can be mediated in shirtsleeve conditions by the enzyme silicatein.
A silicatein molecule attached to a positioning system might be useful in building silica structures to specified shapes.
