Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Silicon Valley   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Silicon Valley is a commonly used nickname for the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area in northern California, USA, originally referring to the concentration of silicon chip innovators and manufacturers, but eventually becoming a metaphor for the entire concentration of high tech businesses.
Silicon refers to the high concentration of semiconductor and computer-related industries in the area; Valley refers to the Santa Clara Valley.
Unfamiliar with silicon, writers assumed that it was a misspelling of silicone, a material used in caulking, breast implants, and other products that had recently been introduced to the public.

While mostly known for their football games, Silicon Dreams also developed other games, including Chill, Dogs of War and several LEGO Group licensed titles, such as Lego Soccer Mania, Drome Racers or Lego Island 2.

Silicon Valley had a short burst of such publicity during the Consumer Internet craze, but for the most part remains tied to business press and trade publications, so the inner workings are more hidden from view.
