It is controlled from an off state (high resistance) to the on state (low resistance) by a signal applied to the third terminal, the gate.
Notice the reverse characteristics are the same as discussed previously for the rectifier or diode, having a breakover voltage with its attending avalanche current; and a leakage current for voltages less than the breakover voltage.
Obviously, the SCR can also be switched by exceeding the forward breakover voltage, however this is usually considered a design limitation and switching is normally controlled with a gate voltage.

Zero voltage switching AC relay circuit - Patent 5027020
The two silicon controlled rectifiers 20 and 22 are arranged so that (when conducting) during the positive half cycles of AC power source 16 when the voltage at terminal 12 is positive with respect to the voltage at the terminal 14, the load current flows through the anode-cathode circuit of the photosilicon controlled rectifier 20.
The NPN transistor 36 is connected with its collector and emitter at the gate and cathode, respectively, of the rectifier 20; and the NPN transistor 38 is connected with its collector and emitter at the gate and cathode, respectively, of the rectifier 22.
This allows the silicon controlled rectifier 20 to turn on only in response to the signal provided by the light emitting diode 26 during the period of the window and entirely eliminates the effect of transients in the output load.

Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCR) (89 companies) Silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR) are four-layer (PNPN) thyristors with three terminals: an input control terminal (gate), an output terminal (anode), and a terminal common to both the input and output (cathode).
SCRs are used mainly with high voltages and currents, often to control alternating current (AC) where the change of sign causes the device to switch off automatically.
Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) The Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) is simply a conventional rectifier controlled by a gate signal.

The control terminal of the SCR is named the gate and it is connected to the p-type layer located next to the cathode.
The anode of the SCR or silicon controlled rectifier is usually bonded to the package since the gate terminal is near the cathode and needs to be connected separately.
The transistor with its emitter connected to the cathode of the thyristor is a n-p-n device whereas the transistor with its emitter connected to the anode of the SCR is a p-n-p variety.

Controlled bridge rectifiers are not limited to single-phase designs.
SCRs may be fired by intentional triggering of the gate terminal, excessive voltage (breakdown) between anode and cathode, or excessive rate of voltage rise between anode and cathode.
SCR terminals may be identified by a continuity meter: the only two terminals showing any continuity between them at all should be the gate and cathode.

Silicon-controlled rectifier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name "silicon controlled rectifier" is a trade name for the type of thyristor commercialized at General Electric in 1957.
SCRs can also be triggered by increasing the forward voltage beyond their rated breakdown voltage, but again, this does not rapidly switch the entire device into conduction and so may be harmful so this mode of operation is also usually avoided.
SCRs can also be found in welding power supplies where they are used to maintain a constant output current or voltage.

An SCR (silicon controlled rectifier is nothing more than a rectifying switch
The smoothest possible control with a normal ac supply is phase-angle firing whereby switching occurs every half cycle as in the normal lamp dimmer switch.
For silicon carbide heaters others that have temperature and age dependent resistance, various combinations of current, voltage and power limiting techniques are used.
One derivative of these for example is maintenance of a constant relationship between controller signal and heater power, in the face of line voltage variation and resistance changes due to temperature and aging.

 Silicon Controlled Rectifier Testing
The SCR specification that determines whether or not it can be tested is the gate trigger voltage or current.
An SCR that is being triggered by the tester and switching properly will show one position as a good PNP transistor and one as a good NPN transistor.
If the replacement SCR does not test, the trigger characteristics are beyond the test signal levels supplied by the tester.

SCR : Silicon Controlled Rectifier : Scrim : Shutter : Shutter Cut : Side Light : SMPTE : Soft Patch : Solo : Span Set ...
An SCR is essentially an electronic switch which achieves the affect of dimming by turning an electrical circuit on and off rapidly over a specific time interval.
Generally multiple dimmers can be patched to single control channels, but a dimmer can not be patched to more than one control channel.
As a greater variety of other types of devices are attached to systems primarily designed to control only dimmers, the relationship of control channels to dimmers becomes increasingly abstract.

Relaxation oscillators tend to have poor frequency control, not to mention a very non-sinusoidal output, and so they exist mostly as demonstration circuits (as is the case here) or in applications where precise frequency control isn't important.
SCRs are unidirectional (one-way) current devices, making them useful for controlling DC only.
When used to control AC power to a load, TRIACs are often accompanied by DIACs connected in series with their gate terminals.

 The Silicon Controlled Rectifier
This circuit, as shown in the schematic diagram to the right, uses two SCRs cross-connected with each other (each gate connected to the other SCR's anode) and triggered from the regular brake lights on either side of the rear of the vehicle.
If only one SCR is triggered (as when you use a turn signal), the triggered SCR gets no anode voltage from the opposite brake light, so the "cyclops" light remains off.
Triggering the SCR causes the circuit to contiuously draw current through the telephone wires, thus causing the switching station to assume a phone is still in use.
