Silly Symphonies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Silly Symphonies was an acclaimed series of animated short subjects produced by Walt Disney Productions from 1929 to 1938.
Donald Duck got his start in a Silly Symphony cartoon (The Wise Little Hen, 1934), and Pluto's first appearance without Mickey Mouse was also in a Silly Symphony cartoon (Mother Pluto, 1936).
Within the animation industry, the Silly Symphonies series is most noted for its use by Walt Disney as a platform for experimenting with processes, techniques, characters, and stories in order to further the art of animation.

Colors in the later "Silly Symphonies" are particularly striking in their richness, depth, and clarity.
The second is a seventeen-minute featurette, "Silly Symphony Souvenirs," which examines a lot of the memorabilia surrounding the cartoons.

The Silly Symphonies utterly dominated the animation Oscars during the 1930s.
Silly Symphonies that introduced continuing characters include Little Hiawatha, who had a series in the back pages of the comic book Walt Disney's Comics & Stories until well into the 1950s and is still occasionally seen in European comics, and The Wise Little Hen (1934), in which Donald Duck appeared as a supporting character.
The Silly Symphonies can still be seen from time to time on The Disney Channel, where they appear side-by-side with Donald, Mickey, et al.

There are also hidden "easter eggs" that have Walt introducing some of the SILLY SYMPHONIES pieces, some of which do not appear elsewhere on the collection despite being listed in the accompanying booklet.
Most commentaries, however, focus on how various SILLY SYMPHONIES pieces seem to be "dress rehearsal precursors" for the animators to experiment with special effects and designs that would later carry through to feature films; for example, Maltin compares the Buttefly Fairy of "The Flying Mouse" with the Blue Fairy of PINNOCHIO.
One thing I did learn from the "Music Land" commentary was that new SILLY SYMPHONIES shorts needed to be created month after month; this definitely would have created a challenge to find new material, especially given the number of years they were produced.

In "Mother Pluto" (a 1936 Pluto solo cartoon that does not really qualify as a "Silly Symphony," in spite of its label), the traditional "maternal" role is imposed on a doting Pluto as he raises a brood of chicks.
The evolution of the "Silly Symphonies" from simple parades to story-driven features-in-training is evident in the only remake Walt authorized during the entire series: "The Ugly Duckling." The 1931 version, filmed in fl and white, is rather different from the fable we tend to remember.

All of these songs, of course, were kept subservient to the overall flow of the pictures; the Silly Symphonies were never reduced to mere showcases for popular songs.
Songs in the Symphonies always helped to establish a character or a mood, and were deftly integrated into the action and incidental scores of the pictures.
In any case, if the practice of original songs was disappearing from the Silly Symphonies, the days of the Symphonies themselves were numbered.
