Town of Silt, Colorado - Home
Many of us are new to Silt, but have backgrounds and experience that compliment each other well.
Silt is facing rapid growth pressures with many annexations and development approvals pending and more expected in the coming months and years.
The Town of Silt is now a Home Rule municipality.

  Wikinfo | Silt
Silt is produced by the mechanical weathering of rock, as opposed to the chemical weathering that results in clays.
Silt can occur as a deposit or as material transported by a stream or by a current in the ocean.
Silt is easily transported in water and is fine enough to be carried long distances by air as 'dust'.

Silt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Silt is soil or rock derived granular material of a specific grain size.
Mineralogically, silt is composed mainly of quartz and feldspar.
A decrease in silt deposited by the Mississippi River throughout the 20th century has contributed to the disappearance of protective wetlands and barrier islands in the delta region surrounding New Orleans.

 Effective Silt Fence Installation
Silt fence installed with a trencher or by slicing is the most effective installation method to ensure against common silt fence failures.
Silt fence is intended to be installed where sediment-laden water can pond, thus allowing the sediment to fall out of suspension and separate from the runoff.
Silt fences placed at the toe of a slope shall be set at least 6 feet (1.8 m) from the toe in order to increase ponding volume.

Dealing with silt in a micro-irrigation system
In the case of silt penetrating deep into the media bed, less vigorous but longer duration backflushing is required to lift the silt out of the media matrix and discharge it without a significant loss of filtration sand.
Screen filter plugging with silt is generally a result of sticky silt particles adhering to the mesh fabric or a trapped particle (sand) and accumulating to such a level that they bridge across the screen’s openings.
Because silt accumulation on a mesh screen gradually creates a finer mesh size until bridging and blinding occurs, the phenomenon of screen plugging appears to be exponential in that very little pressure-differential is observed until the blinding occurs.

SILT [silt] predominantly quartz mineral particles that are between sand size and clay size, i.e., between 1/16 and 1/256 mm (1/406 - 1/6502 in.) in diameter.
Silt, like clay and sand, is a product of the weathering and decomposition of preexisting rock.
Hardened silt forms a sedimentary rock called siltstone, which tends to deposit in thin layers sometimes referred to as flagstone because it is hard, durable, and flat, breaking into nearly rectangular slabs.

RedOrbit - Science - New Methods Used to Clear Creek Silt   (Site not responding. Last check: )
When Contra Costa County crews cleared silt from the Walnut Creek channel 11 years ago, environmentalists accused them of scraping away soil and plants where birds and animals were living.
The first silt removal since 1995 began Aug. 8 and continues through mid-September in a highly visible creek section in Concord north of the junction of Interstate 680 and Highway 24.
Crews also are leaving a much wider plant buffer to keep dirt from polluting the creek and smothering spawning gravels where salmon and steelhead lay eggs during the rainy season after swimming in from the ocean.

Mutual Industries, Inc. - Silt Fences
Silt fence is more durable and resistant to wind damage if each post is twisted 180° during installation.
This wraps each post with silt fence fabric on both sides, reducing the likelihood of the fabric tearing away from the post in a high wind situation.
Mutual’s pre-pocketed silt fence is Mutual’s 36" high MISF 180 fabric, with pockets sewn either 6 feet on center or 8 feet on center.

Syntex silt fence is available in two styles depending upon the performance requirements of the project.
Proper installation requires the Silt Fence be anchored in the trench preferably with the fabric covering the bottom of the trench.
A faster (less effective) method is to drive the stakes into the ground and fasten the silt fence with the guideline at ground level allowing a 200 mm flap which is covered with earth.

Hydrates From Ice (HyFI), Results, Thermal Conductivity in Silt Saturated With Tetrahydrofuran (THF) Hydrate   (Site not responding. Last check: )
In first test of measuring thermal conductivity in a hydrate-bearing silt, the primary purpose is to determine to what extent we need to modify techniques we have used to measure thermal conductivity in pure hydrate and hydrate mixed with sand.
Initial silt + liquid THF + water mixture: The initial porosity is between 45 and 50%, and the measured conductivity near 1.85 W/m·K is close to the water-saturated values from Georgia Tech on clays of similar grain size (4-10 µm silt vs. 1.1 µm clay).
The sample is composed of THF hydrate, water and silt at 3°C, but from previous experiments on pure THF hydrate systems, we know the conductivity measured close to the dissociation temperature of 4°C are elevated due to hydrate dissociation.

The Silt Project is located on the Western Slope of Colorado in Garfield County, near the towns of Rifle and Silt.
Silt developed in its present location because it was halfway between the two towns, seven miles in either direction.
The Silt Project is a good example of Reclamation building the facilities used to maintain successful irrigation efforts and then turning them over to the water users for continued operation and maintenance.

Silt Fence Installation Efficacy   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Introduction Silt fence is a joke on many construction sites.  It is often seen just blowing in the wind, or sagging and broken down.  Some specifiers won’t utilize silt fence on their sites because it is too often installed improperly, and not maintained.  Yet, the need for effective on-site sediment control has never been greater.
Ineffective silt fence is also a waste of valuable environmental protection dollars.  Specifications exist to insure construction monies are properly spent, and to insure that owners’ receive their monies worth.  When specifications are not followed, or are inadequately written, our financial and environmental resources are wasted.
Silt fence is also used along streets within a development to prevent sediment from entering the stormwater system.  Its somewhat temporary nature promotes its use until more permanent stabilization practices can be utilized.

Designed as an effective and economical alternative to straw bales, silt fence, rock check dams and etc., the Triangular Silt Dike™ is a barrier systems that contains erosive soils on roadsides, industrial, and commercial construction sites.
The protective aprons on either side of the barrier prevents both erosion and failure of the structure.
The aprons are attached to the ground and held in place with U-shaped wire staples, helping the Triangular Silt Dike to conform to rough terrain.

Features Vol 50 no 2 - Proper Silt Fence Installation
And that is one of the two most common problems of silt fence: 1) improper placement where ponding cannot occur, and 2) installation issues such as lack of proper backfill and proper compaction.
Because silt fence is mechanically installed in the soil, and supported mechanically, it can detain hundreds of pounds of sediment and water – even a concentrated flow (contrary to general opinion).
And second, the fabric of the silt fence is now completely clogged and can not allow any water to seep through it, so it is no longer functioning as a silt fence, but as a sediment basin with limited capacity.
