Glaciation during the most recent ice age affected the distribution of European fauna.
Having lived side-by-side with agricultural and industrial civilizations for millennia, Europe's animals and plants have been profoundly affected by the presence and activities of man. Deforestation in the Mediterranean basin has been affecting siltation rates and climate for more than 2000 years.
With the exception of Scandinavia and northern Russia, few if any areas of untouched wilderness are today to be found in Europe.

 Crest - Chapter 5, Lesson 19
Siltation is the settling of silt or sediment from dirty water that causes suffocation of the coral polyps.
The siltation of coral reefs is caused by soil erosion.
This cycle of deforestation, soil erosion and siltation is the greatest, most damaging problem to coral reefs.

 Siltation
Another issue dealing with siltation is the construction of dams, which alter the flow of rivers.
A current issue dealing with siltation from damming exists through the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, which will be located on the Yangtze river in China.
Critics argued, however, that heavy siltation would clog ports such as Chongqing within a few years based on the evidence from other dam projects.

Siltation is the settling of particles of soil and earth into the bed of a stream.
Certain amounts of siltation occur naturally, and are necessary to the ecology of a stream.

Sun.Star Baguio - Claimants urged to attend meet on 'siltation' compensation
THE Ambuklao Binga Dam Claims Committee (ABDCC) is urging claimants of properties damaged by siltation to attend a consultation meeting on March 1 to finally decide on a compensation scheme.
Out of this, there are 217 claimants whose properties were submerged by the construction of the two dams, 176 of them located at Ambuklao while the remaining 83 are situated at the Binga side.
The PPDO accounted a total of 374 claimants whose properties were damaged due to the siltation.

LACK of trees in the upland areas of Davao City is considered to be the cause for the heavy siltation near the coastal areas of Barangay 76-A, Bucana, around five to six kilometers from the Davao River outlet.
Ana Wharf to Binugao, Toril showed that the water near the outlet of the Davao River are brown in color because of siltation.
Avila said the siltation have already reached as far as six kilometers from the outlet of the river.

Sriramsagar Project has won the first round of its battle against siltation and promises to live for a century more after its 100 year lifespan certified by its designers.
But what was observed during the studies for which even satellite maps had been used was that the siltation was at the rate of 0.5 acre ft a year working out to 0.3 tmc loss.
With the loss on account of siltation being 8 tmc so far, what today remains as GST is only 90 tmc, they say, even while there has been a hot debate among the engineering circles about this 'dispute" the project engineers are counting 90 tmc as the present capacity for all practical purposes.

Environment Agency - Siltation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
For instance, drainage of moorland and changes in livestock management are widely believed to have resulted in the siltation of important salmon spawning sites in the rivers Tamar, Fowey and Camel in the South West.
Siltation is also seen to be of particular concern on southern chalk rivers, where the combined effect of high sediment loads and low river flows has led to spawning beds becoming heavily compacted.
However, it has demonstrated that the volume of silt in salmonid spawning gravels does reach levels capable of causing eggs to die, and it has also indicated the likely sources of silt in different parts of the country.

 Siltation & Dams
Now that I think about it, siltation is a big problem even here in CA.
All these huge dams we've built don't last forever; they have projected lifetimes that depend on the rate of siltation.
Shasta Dam, for example, was given a projected lifetime of 100 years when it opened in 1939-- after which the area around the dam will be so silted that water will flow over the top.

Pakistan's two large reservoirs, Mangla and Tarbela, which store Indus River water for that country's vast irrigation network, are losing roughly 1 percent of their storage capacity each year as they slowly fill with silt from their deforested watersheds.
In varying degrees, reservoirs are plagued with siltation spurred by deforestation and farming, yielding a lose-lose situation where the loss of soil also reduces the supply of irrigation water.
An analysis of several studies on the effect of soil erosion on crop yields in the United States concluded that for each 1 inch of topsoil lost, wheat and corn yields declined by 6 percent.

The Leader's letter points out that under the Launceston Partnership Agreement both the State Government and the Launceston City Council have recognised the complexity of providing some protection from floods to the Invermay and Inveresk areas, as well as the nexus with the siltation in the rivers.
As a result, he says there is to be a consultancy which will focus on the flood-protection issues, and keep in mind the siltation issues.
Results of the study are to be incorporated in a future submission for funding for the Commonwealth Government; in the meantime, the State Government is contributing $200 000 a year towards continued dredging.

The Newport River estuary siltation study examined whether the estuary is filling with sediments.
The project used several research methods: coring for radiometric dating techniques, a review of any pertinent literature and computation of infilling using bathymetric map comparisons.
Reasons for this are complicated and unresolved, though possibilities include deforestation, changing patterns of land use and dredging, and channel realignments at the Morehead City state port.
