  hydrogen fluoride - HighBeam Encyclopedia
hydrogen fluoride chemical compound, HF, a colorless, fuming liquid or colorless gas that boils at 19.54°C. It is miscible with water and is soluble in benzene, toluene, and concentrated sulfuric acid.
Hydrofluoric acid is a water solution of hydrogen fluoride; hydrofluoric acid containing 35.35% hydrogen fluoride by weight is an azeotrope with a constant boiling point of 120°C. Whether gaseous, liquid, or in solution, hydrogen fluoride is a dangerous chemical and must be handled with caution, since it attacks the skin and other tissue.
Hydrogen fluoride is produced commercially by heating purified fluorspar (calcium fluoride) with concentrated sulfuric acid to produce the gas, which may be condensed by cooling or dissolved in water.

Fluoride also has been used for the treatment of osteoporosis, but much still remains to be learned about maximizing the benefit and minimizing the risk of fluoride when used as a public health measure.
Fluoride supplementation under the daily control of a parent or child is not recommended because of the difficulty in maintaining regular compliance and the risk of fluorosis.
Fluoride supplements are a risk factor for dental fluorosis, though their contribution to the increase in fluorosis prevalence is less than that of water fluoridation and fluoridated dentifrices because of their more limited and shorter use.

Dentists have two main ways of applying Fluoride topically to your teeth
In view of the possibility that lower strength solutions of silver fluoride (1‑4%) may be just as effective as 40% in 'arresting' deep caries, testing should focus on such solutions, particularly as the potential for toxicity from their fluoride content would be reduced by a factor of 10‑40.
If half the fluoride that is released from AgF deposited in a carious cavity that extends close to a pulp horn can enter the systemic circulation via the dental pulp, then a patient who has had four teeth treated at the one sitting could receive in the order of 4 mg of fluoride systemically.
Fluoride levels in such solutions would be in the order of ppm, with a corresponding decrease in the risk of toxic effects due to ingestion of excessive quantities of fluoride.

Fluoride is a compound of the element fluorine, which is found universally throughout nature in water, soil, air and in most foods.
Fluoride is absorbed easily into the tooth enamel, especially in children's growing teeth.
Once teeth are developed, fluoride makes the entire tooth structure more resistant to decay and promotes remineralization, which aids in repairing early decay before the damage is visible.

Silver iodide is dimorphous; at ordinary temperatures the stable form is hexagonal; on heating to about 138° the colour changes from deep yellow to yellowish-white with the formation of cubic crystals.
Silver fluoride, AgF, is obtained as quadratic octahedra, with one molecule of water, by dissolving the oxide or carbonate in hydrofluoric acid.
It is deliquescent, and dissolves in half its weight of water to form a strongly alkaline liquid.

Silver Vanadium Oxide Fluoride, Ag (SVOF) is a being researched as a cathode for for high capacity lithium batteries.
It has a higher accessible silver content and a higher capacity than the commercial cathode material Silver Vanadium Oxide (SVO; Ag The SVOF cathode maintains a greater potential than SVO electrodes for extended periods of time, allowing optimal device performance essential for medical battery applications, such as implantable defibrillators.
When used as a cathode in a lithium battery, SVOF has two distinct regions within the discharge curve - an upper plateau at 3.5 V attributed to silver reduction and a lower sloped region around 2.3 V attributed to the reduction of the vanadium oxide fluoride framework.
