The Silver Age of Comic Books was a period of artistic advancement and commercial success in mainstream American comic books, predominantly in the superhero genre, that lasted roughly from the late 1950s/early 1960s to the early 1970s.
The beginning (as well as the end) of the Silver Age is cause for debate, but it is generally agreed that the period began with DC Comics' Showcase #4 in 1956, which introduced the modern version of the Flash.
The state of the comic book industry as of September 2007, especially that of DC Comics, has been labeled by fans as a second silver age, or Neo Silver Age, due to the return of several of the concepts prevalent in the first silver age.

Schwartz was a pioneer of the Silver Age of comics, joining DC and immediately having an effect on the publications of that company.
The majority consensus agrees that the Golden Age of Comics gave way to the Silver Age of Comics with the publication of DC's "Showcase" #4 in 1956 when DC revived the Flash.

  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Gil Kane
In the late 1950s, Kane, freelancing for DC Comics, helped to usher in the Silver Age of comic books when he became the chief artist for a series of new superhero titles loosely based on 1940s characters, notably Green Lantern and the Atom.
His depiction of her death scene remains controversial as the direct cause of her demise is ambigously depicted [2].
Kane's work on the covers of the "western" comics of the Marvel line, during this period, was particularly fine and evocative stuff; full of "worm's-eye" POVs and tilted, slightly askew backgrounds.

 Metropolis (comics) - Definition, explanation
Metropolis is a fictional city that appears in comic book published by DC Comics, and is the home of the superhero Superman.
Over the years, Metropolis' features have greatly changed in the comics; however, Metropolis is always presented as being a world class city on the same caliber as New York City or Chicago.
In the Silver Age comics, another major Metropolis landmark was the Superman Museum, which featured various exhibits dedicated to Metropolis' favorite superhero.

British Comics Collection: The British Library Newspaper Library
Comics which were designed primarily for children were not published until the early years of the twentieth century, the first being the Rainbow (1914-1956), although Puck (1904-1940), which began as an adult comic, gradually came to be aimed at a much younger readership.
The 1930s were undoubtedly the golden age of the comic, with a large number of titles in publication ranging from Tiny Tots (1927-1959), aimed at the 'nursery market', to Crackers (1929-1941) for older children.
The silver age of the comic was the 1950s, epitomised by the Eagle (1950-1969), with its good-quality paper, full colour photogravure, excellent artwork and front-page hero, Dan Dare, by Frank Hampson, doing battle against the Mekon.

That this humble comic magazine inspired the musical career of George Michael is probably not true, but, if we keep repeating it, we can probably make a lot of people believe it.
In its early issues the comic presented both clear imitations of Beano strips, such as a clone of the Bash Street Kids, and other strips such as Eagle Eye, Junior Spy and Georgie's Germs, which attempted to break the mould of older strips with bizarre humour, outrageous puns, and surreal plots.
